juiceguy1@comcast.net Antioxidant-Rich Diet Helps Fight Leukemia As if undergoing chemotherapy isn't trying enough, kids with the most common form of childhood leukemia receiving this treatment may also experience a significant reduction in their antioxidant and micronutrient levels. This decrease could lead to severe side effects from the chemotherapy. However, there may be a ray of hope amidst this dark cloud. According to a study, children could improve antioxidant and micronutrient levels and prevent some of the adverse side effects of chemotherapy by simply incorporating more fruits and vegetables into their diets. The study, prompted by parental concern regarding children's safety in taking antioxidant supplements (such supplements might affect the high cure rate experienced with leukemia), involved more than 100 recently diagnosed children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The children had their antioxidant levels, antioxidant capacity and oxidative damage measured during their first six months of chemotherapy treatment.

Diet Protects Against Leukemia
Diet Protects Against Leukemia
Sept. 10, 2004 (Ivanhoe Newswire) Rates of childhood leukemia are significantly lower in Asia than in Western countries, and new research presented at the Children with Leukemia conference in London shows the difference may be due to diet. The incidence of leukemia in children under age 5 in Britain has increased by more than 50 percent over the last 50 years. Modern lifestyle factors, such as exposure to radiation, benzene, and environmental pollutants, are thought to play a major role in the rising incidence. Professor Moolky Nagabhushan from Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago conducted research that shows the low incidence of leukemia in Asia is due in part to the protective effect of the spice turmeric, which is widely used in Asian cooking. He says this spice and its coloring agent may lessen the effects of cigarette smoke, radiation-induced damage, and damage from eating certain processed foods. As part of the Northern California Childhood Leukemia Study, Marilyn Kwan, M.D., from the University of California at Berkeley, also collected information on the diets of 328 children diagnosed with leukemia and compared them with controls.

In leukemia, abnormal and immature white blood cells are produced in the bone marrow and lymph system. The immature white blood cells are called leukocytes. In some individuals, leukocytes are so numerous that the blood actually has a whitish tinge. When abnormal and immature white blood cells are produced, production of normal cells decreases and the ability to fight infection decreases. The ability to fight infection decreases because the leukemic cells accumulate and lessen the production of oxygen-carrying red blood cells, blood-clotting cells (platelets), and normal leukocytes. If left untreated, the surplus leukemic cells overwhelm the bone marrow, enter the bloodstream, and will eventually invade other parts of the body, such as the lymph nodes, spleen liver , and the brain , and spinal cord.

New Research Suggests Link Between Maternal Diet and Childhood Leukemia Risk (9/8/04)
A new study suggests that eating more vegetables, fruit and protein before pregnancy may lower the risk of having a child who develops leukemia, the most common childhood cancer in the United States.
"This is the first time researchers have conducted a systematic survey of a woman's diet and linked it to the risk of childhood leukemia," said Dr. Kenneth Olden, director of the Natinal Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, the federal agency that funded the study.
NIEHS is a component of the National Institutes of Health.
The study was conducted by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, and the study results are published in the August 2004 issue of Cancer Causes and Control.
Researchers compared 138 women who each had a child diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) with a control group of 138 women whose children did not have cancer. The children of all the women in the study were matched by sex, age, race, and county of residence at birth.
After comparing the women's diets in the 12 months prior to pregnancy, researchers found that the higher the intake of vegetables, fruit and foods in the protein group, the lower the risk of having a child with leukemia.

"The health benefits of fruits and vegetables have been known for a long time," principal investigator Gladys Block, professor of epidemiology and public health nutrition at U.C. Berkeley said. "What we found in this study is that the protein foods group is also very important."

Diet During Pregnancy Linked with Leukemia in Child Mail this story to a friend Printer friendly version USA: September 29, 2004
NEW YORK - Women who eat a diet rich in vegetables and protein during pregnancy may lower the risk of leukemia in their child, new research findings suggest.
The genetic event that initiates leukemia development may occur in the womb, Dr. Christopher D. Jensen, at the University of California, Berkeley, and his colleagues note. That suggests that potential risk factors in the prenatal environment, such as maternal diet, could be implicated in the development of the disease. The researchers therefore evaluated the diets of women 12 months before they became pregnant, assuming that their diet during this period reflected their diet during pregnancy.

Here is a wealth of studies on cancer and diet.
Macrobiotics and Cancer
In the first major scientific study of the macrobiotic approach to cancer, researchers at Tulane University reported that the 1-year survival rate among patients with pancreatic cancer was significantly higher among those who modified their diet than among those who did not (17 months versus 6 months). The one-year survival rate was 54.2 percent in the macrobiotic patients versus 10.0 percent in the controls. All comparisons were statistically significant. For patients with metastatic prostate cancer, a case control study demonstrated that those who ate macrobiotically lived longer (177 months compared to 91 months) and enjoyed an improved quality of life. The researchers concluded that the macrobiotic approach may be an effective adjunctive treatment to conventional treatment or in primary management of cancers with a nutritional association. "This exploratory analysis suggests that a strict macrobiotic diet is more likely to be effective in the long-term management of cancer than are diets that provide a variety of other foods," the study concluded. Carter et al., "Hypothesis: Dietary Management May Improve Survival from Nutritionally Linked Cancers Based on Analysis of Representative Cases," Journal of the American College of Nutrition 12:209-226, 1993.
