Leukemia:
Story about man who cured himself against all odds
This is a story about my good friend Petar J. I introduced him 1987, in Belgrade, when I first started attending seminars and workshops on health foods. That time he was already cured. In his late forty's he was diagnosed with Leukemia. Doctors who diagnosed him told him that he has less than 4 months of life. He started with strict health food diet called macrobiotic diet and with body building. He stopped drinking coffee, alcohol, milk, and soft drinks. He stopped eating meat, milk products, sugar, tropical fruit, margarine and started exercising every day. I am not sure if it took him 3 or 4 months, but he was totally cured in less than 4 months. He did not used any of the western medicine treatments. So, instead of being dead, he went back to his doctor, and doctor made blood test. Results of blood test showed that he was totally healthy. His doctor did not believed him that it was done only with diet and exercises. His story vas published in many Yugoslavian newspapers. The only comment doctors have had on his story was that he have had "spontaneous remission", and that it has nothing to do with diet or with body building.

In summer 1992, I was organizing one day cooking workshops in Beograd, together with my parents. Many people were interested to learn cooking and we have had almost every weekend one workshop. On one of those workshops came man called Perica Z. Beginning of every workshop was usually introduction. All the people introduce themselves and say a little story about themselves. Perica said that he has come to the seminar because his only child, 4 year old daughter has Leukemia. He also told us that before she was diagnosed with leukemia, she ate ice-cream every day for more than a year. Her mother also loved chocolate and ice-cream. She ate it a lot, before pregnancy, while pregnant and after pregnancy. He also ask me what is my opinion about some alternative cancer cure that was based on honey. I did not suggested him to use it. Perica Z. also came on the next workshop. I suggested him that I should visit them in their house, see his daughter, see their flat and place where she sleeps, and give him more detailed recommendations for her diet.

Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia
The Neutropenic Diet
This is the diet to be used when you are neutropenic. It is important to follow a low bacteria diet until your immune system returns to normal. You must prepare foods in such a way that you avoid risk of infection. As your neutrophils increase your doctor may liberalize your diet. Talk with the doctor or oncology nurse to keep your information up to the minute according to your blood counts.
General Guidelines
  • Check expiration dates on all products before you buy them. Be sure nothing you buy is past it's expiration date.
  • Wash with soap/cleanser and hot water before and after touching food:
    • counter tops,
    • cutting boards (Wash them in a dishwasher if you have one.)
    • all cooking utensils
    • all silverware
    • all pots and pans
  • Food preparer should wash hands frequently with warm soapy water and dry with paper towels. This is especially important after touching raw meat, chicken, eggs, and fish.
  • Wash dishes in hot soapy water or in dishwasher. Air dry dishesDO NOT use cloth towel.

Antioxidant-Rich Diet Helps Fight Leukemia
As if undergoing chemotherapy isn't trying enough, kids with the most common form of childhood leukemia receiving this treatment may also experience a significant reduction in their antioxidant and micronutrient levels. This decrease could lead to severe side effects from the chemotherapy. However, there may be a ray of hope amidst this dark cloud. According to a study, children could improve antioxidant and micronutrient levels and prevent some of the adverse side effects of chemotherapy by simply incorporating more fruits and vegetables into their diets. The study, prompted by parental concern regarding children's safety in taking antioxidant supplements (such supplements might affect the high cure rate experienced with leukemia), involved more than 100 recently diagnosed children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The children had their antioxidant levels, antioxidant capacity and oxidative damage measured during their first six months of chemotherapy treatment. Findings
  • Blood levels of vitamin E decreased over time, while vitamin A and total carotenoids increased

Aspartame Linked to Leukemia
Doubts flare up once again regarding the safety of the artificial sweetener aspartame. The additive, also known as NutraSweet, is 200 times sweeter than sugar and is used throughout the world in 6,000 diet foods and pharmaceutical products including Diet Coke, Pepsi Max, strawberry yogurt, Wrigley's Extra Spearmint chewing gum, vitamins and sugar-free cough drops. According to a team of Italian scientists, using aspartame has been linked to cancerspecifically, leukemias in rodents. Bitter Results For the study, researchers fed 8-week-old rats varying concentrations of aspartame. Results showed that, compared with control rats given no sweetener:
  • Many of the female rats fed aspartameat levels very near those to which humans can be exposed todeveloped lymphomas or leukemias; the risk increased with the dose of aspartame.

New study suggests link between maternal diet and childhood leukemia risk By Sarah Yang, Media Relations BERKELEY The study, published in the August 2004 issue of Cancer Causes and Control, is the first time researchers have conducted a systematic survey of a woman's diet and linked it to childhood leukemia risk. The researchers compared 138 women who each had a child diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) with a control group of 138 women whose children did not have cancer. The children of all the women in the study, which is part of the Northern California Childhood Leukemia Study, were matched by sex, age, race, and county of residence at birth. After comparing the women's diets in the 12 months prior to pregnancy, the researchers found that the higher the intake of vegetables, fruit and foods in the protein group, the lower the risk of having a child with leukemia.

Julie A. Ross, MPH, PhD, and colleagues from the University of Minnesota looked at data from more than 35,000 women and found that those who ate more vegetables appeared to be less likely to develop this form of cancer. Leukemia Has Few Known Risk Factors Leukemia — a cancer of infection-fighting white blood cells — occurs in both adults and children, but can be a devastating disease at any age. Research on leukemia has greatly improved treatment of the disease, especially among children. But it has led to few dramatic breakthroughs in understanding of how to prevent it.

New Research Suggests Link between Maternal Diet and Childhood Leukemia Risk A new study suggests that eating more vegetables, fruit and protein before pregnancy may lower the risk of having a child who develops leukemia, the most common childhood cancer in the United States. "This is the first time researchers have conducted a systematic survey of a woman's diet and linked it to the risk of childhood leukemia," said Dr. Kenneth Olden, director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, the federal agency that funded the study. NIEHS is a component of the National Institutes of Health. The study was conducted by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, and the study results are published in the August 2004 issue of Cancer Causes and Control Researchers compared 138 women who each had a child diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) with a control group of 138 women whose children did not have cancer. The children of all the women in the study were matched by sex, age, race, and county of residence at birth.
