Lesotho is a very mountainous developing country in southern Africa completely surrounded by the country of South Africa. Facilities for tourists are limited. The capital city of Maseru is at 5000 ft. (1500m) above sea level, and the mountains reach to 11,400 ft. (3500m).
Visitors to the interior of Lesotho should bring clothing and equipment suitable for cold weather. In the mountains, weather conditions can deteriorate rapidly. In winter (June-October), snow will often close mountain passes, and temperatures, even in the lowlands, often drop below freezing during the night.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: A passport is required, but no visa is needed for visits of 30 days or less. For more information concerning entry requirements, travelers may contact the Embassy of the Kingdom of Lesotho, 2511 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20008, telephone (202) 797-5533. Overseas inquiries may be made at the nearest embassy or consulate of Lesotho.
REGISTRATION AND EMBASSY LOCATION: Americans living in or visiting Lesotho are encouraged to register at the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy and obtain updated information on travel and security within Lesotho. The U.S. Embassy is located at 254 Kingsway, Maseru West; the mailing address is P.O. Box 333, Maseru 100, Lesotho. The telephone number is 266-312-666.

Across the Divide is proud to present two expeditions to this amazing country, both finishing off with a visit to South Africa's Golden Gate Highlands National Park and a visit to the Drakensberg Escarpment. Across the Divide offers the complete range of charity treks and charity projects in one of Africa's most underrated and least known countries, the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho. Charity Treks in Lesotho offer a chance to literally step back in time to a place where the motor vehicle does not exist. The Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho is a much underrated and hidden behind the glamour of its larger neighbour, South Africa, but our charity walks and treks here offer something quite different and a chance to explore this fascinating country before the inevitable step of progress treks across this hidden land. Join our charity treks and charity challenges and you can not only explore Lesotho but also raise much needed funds for charity. Lesotho is a world without fences and is one of Africa's hidden gems

Lesotho: Culture undermines prevention efforts in Lesotho
ID By IRIN Summary Education programmes hope to improve knowledge of HIV/AIDS. Social and cultural norms and traditions in Lesotho are hampering efforts to combat the rising HIV/AIDS epidemic, government officials told IRIN.
Mathoriso Monaheng, Director of Administration at the Lesotho AIDS Programme Co-ordinating Agency (LAPCA), said the first case of HIV/AIDS was detected in Lesotho in 1986, when "a medical practitioner from East Africa, working in the Mokhotlong district, about 8 hours drive from [the capital] Maseru," was diagnosed as HIV-positive. "As a result, everybody concluded that it was a disease for the foreigner.
Ignorance about HIV/AIDS has been a major stumbling block for efforts at halting the spread of the disease, she said. Monaheng used as an example of this the belief among some that condom's were responsible for the spread of the disease.
The government has committed itself to disbursing 2 percent of its budget - an estimated Maloti 53.2 million (about US $5.6 million) - to various ministries for their HIV programmes in a bid to improve knowledge of the disease and boost prevention efforts.
Donors in Lesotho have committed up to M42.8 million (about US $4.5 million) for HIV/AIDS programmes, while civil society organisations committed up to M3.6 million (about US $380,000). A total of M99.6 million (US $10.5 million) has thus been set aside for HIV/AIDS interventions.
