Notable Internet Resources from State Government
Revised Fall 2005
The staff of the State Publications Library, Colorado State Library, is pleased to publish this list for educators, librarians and students. The Internet is a valuable resource in education. The State Publications Library tracks computerized reports, statistics, and other educational information from state agencies as part of its many services. While the sites listed below are all available via the Internet, the State Publications Library can help you find publications in printed format, too, deliverable to you via interlibrary loan or your closest depository library.
Web site URLs may have changed since the printing of this list. If a web address does not connect, go to http://www.colorado.gov and search by subject keyword. As with any use of the Internet by minors under the age of 18, educators and parents may want to monitor children’s use.

The following list is not exhaustive, but includes many of the major resources for international statistical data held by the Library. For additional help please ask a Librarian at the REF6 reference desk. Please note that aisle numbers for Int'l. Docs may not be accurate, as the area is undergoing a shift. Check with a librarian if you encounter difficulties. Section 1: International Statistical Sources
  • UN Commodity Trade Statistics Database (UN Comtrade) Every year over 130 countries provide the United Nations Statistics Division with their annual international trade statistics, detailed by commodity and partner country. These data are processed into a standard format with consistent coding and valuation. All values are converted into US dollars using exchange rates supplied by the countries, or derived from monthly market rates and volume of trade.
ITCS International Trade by Commodity Database
The ITCS - International Trade by Commodities Statistics database set is a unique and reliable source of yearly statistical data on imports and exports in OECD countries, selected non OECD countries, as well as in the OECD main country groupings. It provides detailed data in value (thousands USD) and quantity by commodities and by partner countries.

Quantitative model development
Methodologies

ILO actuaries were in the vanguard of the development of actuarial techniques for social insurance schemes. Most of this development took place between the 1930s and 1950s and was later codified in standard text books. The methodologies adapted standard actuarial techniques, which historically were largely developed to suit the needs of private insurance, to publicly underwritten statutory social insurance systems. Pioneering work was undertaken, for example, when the mathematical mapping of the scaled premium system of financing, which sets out the rules and principles of a partial funding of public insurance systems, was formulated.
Modelling : past
The late 1960s and 1970s saw the development of mainframe-based computer models for actuarial valuations. ILO actuaries developed a generic computer model which could be easily adapted for use in all client countries. The rapid demand for services, notably from countries in Latin America, Asia and Africa, made this necessary. In the late 1980s, the heavy mainframe modelling machinery was transferred to PCs so that ILO computer models now became portable. The Service began to transfer model technology to client countries. At about the same time, and simultaneous to the PC revolution during the late 1980s and the early 1990s, national social protection systems faced increasing challenges with respect to their economic and fiscal sustainability. New methodological developments were needed to cope with these challenges in a proper analytical fashion. The Service had to leave the restricted domain of actuarial mathematics and move into long-term economic forecasting.
