Indiana State Data Center Frequently Asked Questions Q. Can I get Census records about individuals?
A. The U.S. population census records contain a wealth of information about people. Individual records from the Federal population censuses are confidential for 72 years, by law (Title 44, U.S. Code). In April 2002 the National Archives opened the 1930 records to public use. The Census Bureau can release details from recent files in the form of official transcripts, but only to the named persons, their heirs, or legal representatives. There is a congressionally mandated fee for this service. Since by law, this census information is confidential and collected only for statistical purposes, it is exempt from the disclosure provisions of the Freedom of Information Act and the Privacy Act. This means that no one can gain access to confidential census records or avoid the search fees through these acts. Transcript applications forms may be obtained from the Indiana State Data Center. The form and contact information are also on the Internet.

Government Documents
What are they?
"Government documents" is a catchall term for any and all information produced by any government agency. Although the term usually refers to documents put out by the federal government, local, state, and international organizations and agencies also issue documents. The word "document" is actually misleading, since government documents come in a variety of forms. Books, pamphlets, posters, periodicals, and online databases are all government documents if they are produced by a government agency. A hint:
The first commandment of any kind of documents research is this: Know Your Government or Organization . The more you know about the US Government, the United Nations, state governments, or local governments, the better you will be able to figure out what kind of information they produce and how to find it. This is especially true of legal research. If you do not understand the legislative or judicial process at the local, state, federal, or international level, you will have a harder time locating information on bills, laws, and court cases, and you will have a harder time understanding what you do find.

    Significant Points
    • While some paralegals train on the job, employers increasingly prefer graduates of postsecondary paralegal education programs; college graduates who have taken some paralegal courses are especially in demand in some markets.
    • Paralegals are projected to grow faster than average, as law offices try to reduce costs by assigning them tasks formerly carried out by lawyers.
    • Paralegals are employed by law firms, corporate legal departments, and various government offices and they may specialize in many different areas of the law.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top One of a paralegal’s most important tasks is helping lawyers prepare for closings, hearings, trials, and corporate meetings. Paralegals investigate the facts of cases and ensure that all relevant information is considered. They also identify appropriate laws, judicial decisions, legal articles, and other materials that are relevant to assigned cases. After they analyze and organize the information, paralegals may prepare written reports that attorneys use in determining how cases should be handled. Should attorneys decide to file lawsuits on behalf of clients, paralegals may help prepare the legal arguments, draft pleadings and motions to be filed with the court, obtain affidavits, and assist attorneys during trials. Paralegals also organize and track files of all important case documents and make them available and easily accessible to attorneys.

The Canadian Lifelong Health Initiative - A CIHR Cross Cutting Initiative
    Background
The Canadian Lifelong Health Initiative ( CLHI ) is a cross cutting initiative that is currently being developed by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research ( CIHR The Institutes have come together to advance the CLHI because the scale, cost, degree of organization and multidisciplinary leadership and broad expected outcomes are beyond the scope and mandate of any single Institute. Furthermore, the proposed initiative would require large cohorts within the Canadian population as a whole, and within specific subpopulations, and would require an unprecedented degree of coordination and interaction across a spectrum of research communities. The CIHR Research Priorities and Planning Committee ( RPPC ), part of whose mandate is to recommend the overall CIHR health research agenda including research priority initiatives and budget allocations to the CIHR Governing Council, have approved the development of the Canadian Lifelong Health Initiative.

This article appears in the Web, and not the print, version of Ariadne. (Planet SOSIG continues its review of the main SOSIG subject sections, highlighting the resources that the Internet can offer to those working in the different fields of the social sciences. In this edition, we describe two sections of SOSIG: 1) the Law Section and 2) the Statistics and Demography Section. Sue Pettit is a law librarian at the University of Bristol and is the Law section editor for SOSIG. Her article gives an overview of the resources likely to be found in the law section and a glimpse at the selection criteria she employs. Wendy White and Janette Cochrane are librarians working in the Hartley Library at the University of Southampton. They have been developing the Statistics and Demography Sections of SOSIG (with help from colleagues) for a few hours each week since May 1997. Wendy concentrates on statistics resources and Janette concentrates on demography resources. Their article describe the types of resources users can expect to find in their respective sections 1) The Law Section of SOSIG There is much legal information available on the Internet and, before looking at the detailed subject breakdown on SOSIG, it may be helpful to consider the main types of information provider.

    INFERENCE and NUMBERS
When should you use numbers, or 'quantitative' methods? You need to make this decision on the basis of the type of arguments you intend to develop. Then you can decide whether you need to count anything, a nd if so, what. Numbers have two main uses in research. Comparison . When comparing two or more different ways of doing things, numbers provide a base line of comparison. To compare case flow rates in different courts, for instance, or to compare the cost of different programs, we can count the days or the dollars, and say one is faster or cheaper than another.
