Section 7. Legal Considerations
The liability, rights and responsibilities of school personnel in maintaining a safe school environment are affected by a variety of local, state, and federal statutes, regulations, constitutional requirements, and judicial decisions. School policies also may play a key role in establishing liability and affecting the responsibilities of school personnel. Schools seeking to avoid liability for acts related to school violence, including the steps taken to prevent it, should become familiar with the legal requirements. The following pages offer a foundation to begin a legal audit of schools' current policies and practices for reducing school violence. The following list of legal considerations is not comprehensive. Before acting on any of these issues, consult with legal counsel.

Information sharing pilot between police and family courts
An information-sharing pilot between the police and family courts started on 1 December 2004 and ends in August 2005. The pilot will go live in five areas: London, Manchester, Merseyside, Lancashire and Cumbria. There is a protocol and an evaluation questionnaire for this initiative. They have been tailored for regional areas, with one version for the Metropolitan Police Service and another for the Northern Circuit area. Further information on the pilot is available in the explanatory memorandum We have developed this pilot with the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO).
