Lebanon is the historic home of the Phoenicians, Semitic traders whose maritime culture flourished there for more than 2,000 years (c.2700-450 B.C.). In later centuries, Lebanon's mountains were a refuge for Christians, and Crusaders established several strongholds there. Following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire after World War I, the League of Nations mandated the five provinces that had comprised present-day Lebanon to France. Modern Lebanon's constitution, drawn up in 1926, specified a balance of political power between the various religious groups. The country gained independence in 1943, and French troops withdrew in 1946. Lebanon's history from independence has been marked by periods of political turmoil interspersed with prosperity built on Beirut's position as a regional center for finance and trade. In 1958, during the last months of President Camille Chamoun's term, an insurrection broke out, and U.S. forces were briefly dispatched to Lebanon in response to an appeal by the government. During the 1960s, Lebanon enjoyed a period of relative calm and Beirut-focused tourism and banking sector-driven prosperity. Other areas of the country, however, notably the South, North, and Bekaa Valley, experienced increasing impoverishment. In the early 1970s, difficulties arose over the presence of Palestinian refugees, many of whom arrived after the 1967 Arab-Israeli war and "Black September" 1970 hostilities in Jordan. Among the latter were Yasser Arafat and the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO). Coupled with the Palestinian problem, Muslim and Christian differences grew more intense.

By Kirk Pearce The Bicentennial of the United States in 1976 was celebrated in great fashion locally. In 1975, Lebanon agreed to build a bicentennial program that would fit in with the national order. The themes were: Heritage: The way we were; Festival: The way we are; and Horizons: The way we hope to be.
The first meeting of the Lebanon Bicentennial Commission was Feb. 13, 1975. The commission included a group of Lebanon residents who organized and planned many programs. The executive board was made up of Eddie Smith, Billie Lee Walstrom, Jim Henderson, chairman Wally Schuette, Dalton Wright and Alan DeBerry. Missouri Chief Justice Robert Donnelly, formerly of Lebanon, was guest speaker, with state Sen. James Noland making the presentation to the city. On that special day, State Rep. Margaret "Peg" Miller of Marshfield, who was a member of the State Bicentennial Commission, presented a bicentennial plaque to the city. One of the best-remembered events was "Pioneer Lebanon On Tour,'' organized by Diane Eastburn Ames and committee. This was held at Nelson Community Center Feb. 13-15, 1976, and drew a record crowd. On display were old-time shops and home settings furnished with antiques, including demonstrations. The Laclede County Historical Society was reorganized and has remained active during the past 27 years.

Introductory Note
History, and different perceptions of history, are perhaps the most important factors in the Arab-Israeli conflict. Accounts of history, interpreting history in different ways, are used to justify claims and to negate claims, to vilify the enemy and to glorify "our own" side. Dozens of accounts have been written. Most of the accounts on the Web are intended to convince rather than to inform. This very brief account is intended as a balanced overview and introduction to Palestinian and Israeli history, and the history of the conflict. It is unlikely that anyone has written or will write an "objective" and definitive summary that would be accepted by everyone, but it is hoped that this document will provide a fair introduction.

A country of southwest Asia on the Mediterranean Sea. The site of ancient Phoenicia, the region was gradually absorbed by the Persian Empire and later conquered by Alexander the Great. Eventually it came under Roman control and was Christianized before the Arab conquest of the 7th century. Part of the Ottoman Empire from the early 16th century, Lebanon became a French League of Nations mandate after World War I and proclaimed its independence in 1941, although full self-government was not achieved until 1945. Tensions between Christians and Muslims led (1975) to civil war, which finally came to an end in 1991. Beirut is the capital and the largest city. Population: 3,770,000 . var tcdacmd="cc=edu;dt";

96. The Syrian Occupation Of Lebanon - Mordechai Nisan
Overview of the history of the occupation, and political considerations.
http://www.gotc.org/syrian_occupation_of_lebanon.htm
The Syrian Occupation of Lebanon Mordechai Nisan Executive Summary The struggle of Lebanon to preserve its national identity and political independence has, in particular, faced the hegemonic ambition of Syria. Since the 1970s, Damascus has succeeded to implement an incremental, yet systematic policy of occupation over Lebanon that has transformed the political, social, and economic character of the country. The Syrian occupation, calling it by its proper appellation, was consummated in 1989 with the Taif Accord and in 1990 with the removal of General (and Prime Minister) Michel Aoun from the Ba’abda presidential palace and with the full conquest of Beirut, Lebanon’s capital. Syrian occupation employed a wide range of policy means to transform Lebanon into a “client state” and a Syrian political satellite. By means of military control and political penetration, media repression and alien colonization, Lebanon has lost its independence. Under foreign rule within the matrix of a foreign-manipulated police state, the Lebanese suffer from Arabization and Syrianization that deny the people, especially the Maronite Christians, their freedom and dignity. Many have been forced into exile across the countries and continents of the Lebanese diaspora. Syria’s occupation regime in Lebanon suggests comparison with the Anschluss of 1936, the Munich capitulation of 1938, and the setting up of the Vichy regime of 1940. Stalinism as a terror state model is also evocative of Lebanon’s pitiful subjugation about which, however, the international community shows hardly any concern.

Ancient The Phoenician Experience Lebanon L ebanon is a very special place for many reasons. Beirut [click to enlarge] Its Phoenician history gives it one of the world's richest legacies. Ever since the days of the Egyptian pharaohs it has had a significant impact on world events, even if it chose to let more flamboyant countries have the center stage. Byblos [click to enlarge] Its unique physical location in the Middle East placed it on the only viable north-south land routes in antiquity . . . the coastal channel and the Bekaa Valley. Traders and armies alike passed through these routes. From the Bekaa Valley the Lebanon Mountains towered high to the west, then their slopes went down to the Mediterranean seashore. This left a narrow coastal channel between the sea and the mountains, lined by the main cities. To the east of the Valley, the Anti-Lebanon Mountains rose to their peaks, then their eastern slopes fell away to the desert. The great armies of the times, one after another, marched up the coast or through this Valley: Egyptians, Hittites, Syrians, Assyrians, Babylonians, on and on. Tyre [click to enlarge] But between these military events, the people of the coastline and the valley found time to live among the forested slopes and raise their families. They lived in small towns, rural areas and, last but not least, in the cities whose names are recorded by poets, historians and weavers of myths. They also have their own internationally recognized poet in Khalil Gibran, who was born in Bcharré near the ancient cedar groves.

Israel has long sought a peaceful northern border. But Lebanon's position as a haven for terrorist groups has made this impossible. In March 1978, PLO terrorists infiltrated Israel. After murdering an American tourist walking near an Israeli beach, they hijacked a civilian bus. The terrorists shot through the windows as the bus traveled down the highway. When Israeli troops intercepted the bus, the terrorists opened fire. A total of 34 hostages died in the attack. In response, Israeli forces crossed into Lebanon and overran terrorist bases in the southern part of that country, pushing the terrorists away from the border. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) withdrew after two months, allowing United Nations forces to enter. But UN troops were unable to prevent terrorists from reinfiltrating the region and introducing new, more dangerous arms. Violence escalated with a series of PLO attacks and Israeli reprisals. Finally, the United States helped broker a ceasefire agreement in July 1981. The

    A Brief History of Lebanon Dispels the Illusion that President Bush Is Driving Events There
    By Juan Cole
    Mr. Cole is Professor of Modern Middle Eastern and South Asian History at the University of Michigan. His website is http://www.juancole.com/
    It is often pointed out that presidents get too much praise and blame for the economy, since the domestic economy has its own rhythms. We are now going to see everything that happens in the Middle East attributed to George W. Bush, whether he had much to do with it or not (usually not). In the 1600s and 1700s, the Druze were the most powerful community on the Levantine coast. But in the 1800s the Druze were eclipsed by the Maronite Christians, both because the latter had a population boom and because they grew wealthy off their commercial ties to France and their early adoption of silk growing and modern commerce. When the French conquered Syria in 1920, they decided to make it easier to rule by dividing it. They carved off what is now Lebanon and gerrymandered it so that it had a Christian majority. In 1920, Maronite Catholics were probably 40 percent of the population, and with Greek Orthodox and others the Christian population came to 51 percent. The Shiites were probably only about 18 percent of the population then. Both under the French Mandate (1920-1946) and in the early years of the Lebanese Republic, the Maronites were the dominant political force. When Lebanon became independent in 1943, the system was set up so that Christians always had a 6 to 5 majority in parliament.
