The government policy of confessionalism, or the grouping of people by religion, plays a critical role in Lebanon’s political and social life and has given rise to Lebanon’s most persistent and bitter conflicts. At the time of Lebanon’s independence in the 1940s, there were more Christians than Muslims. In the following years, many Muslims immigrated to Lebanon and had a higher birthrate than the Christians; as a result, Muslims became the majority group in Lebanon. Today, an estimated 70 percent of Lebanese are Muslim, while most of the remaining 30 percent are Christian. Every person’s religion is encoded on a required, government-issued identification card. The government recognizes 17 distinct religious sects: 5 Muslim (

Cultural Event for ACCESS Students

U.S. Embassy
Welcome to all of you to the U.S. Embassy. I am very pleased you could join us for a very typical American summer event—an outdoor barbeque with friends. Thank you for being here with us. I know I missed a great event several months ago when you gathered at McDonald’s restaurant for lunch but I am very pleased that Mr. Jean Zoghzoghi, who made that event possible, could join us today for this barbeque.
Being here with you today brings back memories of my own high school days. I remember how I always felt as the end of the school year got closer. I couldn’t wait to finish final exams, to put aside my books and studying and enjoy the long summer vacation. I imagine you all are feeling the same.
I hope, though, that your participation in the ACCESS English language program has made this school year extra rewarding. I applaud your commitment to learn English with us and admire your willingness to study additional hours—beyond your regular school program—to develop English skills. I hope that through your language study, and events such as today’s barbeque, you have learned more about America, its people, culture and institutions.

The Public Affairs Section also organizes cultural programs to promote better understanding of the diversity of American arts and culture. A Department of State-sponsored photography exhibit, American Roadside Architecture , was exhibited at three sites in Lebanon in 2004-05. For more than 25 years, architectural historian John Margolies crisscrossed the continental United States, camera in hand, to capture and preserve images of a vanishing tradition in American commerce—the early gas stations, roadside lodging and quick stop restaurants that sprung up along American roadsides. Exhibited in Beirut, Byblos, and Baatron, Margolies’ photos offered a look at America during the beginning of the automobile age.
Thanks to a PAS-organized program on American Independent Cinema. Beirut audiences also had an opportunity to view two highly acclaimed American films, in March 2004. The Embassy held public showings of the Academy Award winning documentary "

The workshop contributed to an informed public debate about the best ways for Lebanon to build on its comparative advantage, in a world where the knowledge economy and creative industries are major factors of economic growth and social development. For the purpose of the project, the cultural industries sector was defined as including the branches of the Lebanese economy that produce tangible or intangible cultural and intellectual products, such as:
