address diverse learning styles Students learn in different ways and often come to a course with different backgrounds and levels of preparedness. Using the Web, you can make many types and levels of material available to your students in different forms, allowing them to engage with course material at their own pace and in the medium that suits them best.
  • piqueing student interest in course material using media appropriate to course content reaching students in a variety of ways
Some options for addressing diverse learning styles are suggested below.
  • Course Web site - A Web site can be the gateway to resources tailored for a variety of learning styles. Sounds, images, simulations, and text enable students to learn course concepts from different perspectives and can be accessed directly from your course Web site. You may simply want to provide your syllabus online, or offer course notes for review so that students can access this information at any time, from home or school. There are numerous ways to go about creating a Web site. The Catalyst Web site offers step-by-step instructions for using a variety of Web page editors. Action Plan Planning Considerations
Electronic discussion - Some students appreciate time to "marinate" their ideas rather than present them in an impromptu fashion during class. Tools for electronic discussion might be just what you need to elicit participation from everyone in your course.

Learning Styles
Overview
Many educators theorize that learners differ in their preferences for receiving and processing information. When a student's learning style differs from an instructor's teaching style, the student's performance may suffer or the student may become bored and inattentive. Many instructors have found value in exploring the ways that students learn and diversifying their teaching methods accordingly. It is not expected that an instructor will teach to each student's preference but instead strike a balance that will be helpful to a variety of students. Students are more likely to remain engaged and interested and since a variety of methods are used, students will also still be exposed to different ways of learning. How can we incorporate this understanding into our teaching? One approach is to provide students with a learning style assessment at the beginning of the semester. Instructors that do this assess the diversity that exists among their students and tailor their teaching styles to the students they have that semester. An advantage of this approach is that it allows students to consider their own styles of learning and develop learning strategies that are most beneficial for that particular style. Some students may also recognize that there are skills that they need to develop in order to become more flexible learners. Another approach is to simply assume that in any given class there will be at least one person who represents each learning style profile. By taking this approach instructors can begin to practice and incorporate techniques that reach a more diverse group of students. The following are suggestions for applying information about learning styles to your teaching:

Introduction
A combination of political, social and economic drivers has effected major changes in higher education. Much of the change is centred on the ever-widening diversity of students entering the sector and academics are realising that a change to their teaching is required to accommodate this. We can no longer assume all students will achieve by being taught the same way, and consequently new teaching practices are required. Adopting new methods and techniques is aided greatly by the appreciation of the existence of different learning styles. The paragraphs that follow illustrate differing styles and offer suggestions as to how these may be embraced within the engineering curriculum.

Theory
Learning is an interactive process, the product of student and teacher activity within a specific learning environment. These activities, which are the central elements of the learning process, show a wide variation in pattern, style and quality (Keefe, 1987). Learning problems frequently are not related to the difficulty of the subject matter but rather to the type and level of cognitive process required to learn the material (Keefe, 1988). Gregorc and Ward (1977) claim that if educators are to successfully address the needs of the individual they have to understand what "individual" means. They must relate teaching style to learning style.
The famous case of Tinker versus DesMoines Community School District (1969) which concerns itself with student rights will be extended to encompass the right of a student to learn in ways that complement his ability to achieve. Public Law 94-142 which requires the identification of learning style and individualization for all handicapped children is one step away from mandating individualization for all students (Dunn and Dunn, 1978). Educators must learn to base programs on the differences that exist among students rather than on the assumption that everyone learns the same way (Keefe, 1987).
Learning has taken place when we observe a change of learner behavior resulting from what has been experienced. Similarly, we can recognize the learning style of an individual student only by observing his overt behavior. Learning style is a consistent way of functioning that reflects the underlying causes of learning behavior (Keefe, 1987).

Attending to Learning Styles in Mathematics and Science Classrooms. ERIC Digest. by Thomson, Barbara S. - Mascazine, John R. We all have our own ways of doing things, from washing dishes to planning a trip. The preferences, tendencies, and strategies that individuals exhibit while learning constitute what have come to be called "learning styles." Formal study of learning styles has developed over the past 30 years from a variety of conceptual orientations. Among the theories of learning styles, that of Dunn and Dunn (1978) is among the most comprehensive in scope and practice for teachers. (DeBello, 1990) THE DUNN MODEL *"Environmental" includes: light, sound, temperature, and room design. *"Emotional" includes: structured planning, persistence, motivation, and responsibility. *"Sociological" includes: pairs, peers, adults, self, group, and varied. *"Physical" includes: perceptual strengths, mobility, intake, and time of day. *"Psychological" includes: global/analytic, impulsive/reflective, and right- or left-brain dominance.

Increasingly, educational leaders are recognizing that the process of learning is critically important and understanding the way individuals learn is the key to educational improvement. The shortcomings of education in general have been addressed in "A Nation at Risk" (National Commission on Excellence in Education, 1983) and "An Imperiled Generation: Saving Urban Schools" (Carnegie Foundation, 1988). Evidence abounds that the educational establishment in the United States is comparatively behind that of selected Western European and Asian nations in teaching youth the knowledge base and skills necessary to compete in a highly technical era. The challenge for our schools today is to assess the learning style characteristics of each student and to provide teaching and counseling interventions that are compatible with those characteristics. The counselor's role in learning styles is majorboth as a consultant to teachers and as a provider of counseling services.

Teaching With Style:
The Integration of Teaching and
Learning Styles in the Classroom
Anthony F. Grasha, Psychology, University of Cincinnati

Traditionally the concept of teaching style has been viewed in a pejorative manner. "It has been confused with affectation, denigrated as a kind of posturing to mask a lack of substance, or tolerated as a natural manifestation of personal eccentricities" [Eble, 1980, p. 1]. Thus, to define our styles, as teachers, to understand it, to develop it, and to use it effectively entails moving beyond the limited and negative sense in which it is sometimes perceived. Style in teaching is more than a superficial collection of interesting mannerisms used to create an impression. It is best viewed as a pervasive quality that plays an important role in several aspects of our teaching. Our personal qualities guide and direct the selection of instructional processes. Thus, style becomes the mechanism responsible for how we convey the substance of our disciplines. Style also reflects what Reinsmith (1992; 1994) describes as the teacher's presence and the nature and quality of the encounter with students. As a result, the efficacy with which we display our styles as teachers has two effects on students.
