Highlights This Week (September 19 - 25):
Components of Effective Reading Instruction
There is no single "best" program for teaching reading. However, scientific investigators agree about the need for instruction to address certain key abilities involved in learning to read. The importance of different reading-related abilities tends to shift somewhat with grade level and stage of development in reading; the abilities needed to be a successful middle- or high-school reader are not exactly the same as those required for success in first grade. Many authorities also agree that certain qualities can help to make reading instruction more effective with most youngsters, although students with learning disabilities in reading may have some special instructional needs Click here to read this month's article on Components of Effective Reading Instruction Check out these LD OnLine articles about Reading Instruction

Overview In DoDEA's Community Strategic Plan, the vision statement, the mission statement and the guiding principles each embrace the notion that ALL students will be successful in our schools. Special educators work collaboratively with general educators and share the responsibility for ensuring that students with identified disabilities will meet with success. ALL students can learn when instruction is geared to their strengths and they are given sufficient opportunity to learn. Special education is specially designed instruction, support, and services provided to students with an identified disability requiring an individually designed instructional program to meet their unique learning needs. The purpose of special education is to enable students to successfully develop to their fullest potential by providing a free appropriate public education in compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) as implemented by DoD Instruction 1342.12, "Provision of Early Intervention and Special Education Services to Eligible DoD Dependents."

LEARNING DISABILITIES (LD) Q. What are learning disabilities?
    A.
    Q. What are the causes of learning disabilities? How do they occur?
    A.
Though, at present, what exactly causes learning disability is not known, a leading theory is that they arise from subtle disturbances in brain structures and functions. In many cases, the disturbance may begin before birth. If the brain disturbance occurs early in pregnancy, the fetus may die or the baby may have mental retardation. If these disturbances occur later in pregnancy they may show up as learning disabilities.
Other factors that are associated with learning disabilities are:
    • Tobacco, alcohol and drug use by mother during pregnancy.
