Find out which common myths keep students with disabilities from positive educational experiences and then find out the truth.

Myth vs. Fact: The Truth About Learning Disabilities and Special Education
Brought to FEN by The Council for Exceptional Children The major barriers to achievement by students with disabilities in our society continue to be attitudinal barriers, stereotypical thinking, and a lack of understanding of special education and its role in our schools. The truth is that many individuals with disabilities are capable of achieving a high degree of success academically and professionally. We need to banish our stereotypical images and view each student as an individual who brings his or her special abilities and talents to the classroom. Listed below are the kinds of assumptions that can be barriers to positive educational experiences for students with disabilities and the field of special education. Myth: Students with disabilities can't learn.
Fact: When students with disabilitieseven those with severe disabilitiesreceive appropriate instruction, they grow academically. As we learn more about how to best teach students with disabilities, their achievement and successes increase, as evidenced by the increasing number of students with special needs graduating from high school and going on to pursue postsecondary education. In 1992, 229,368 students with disabilities exited the educational system. The majority graduated with a standard high school diploma or a certificate of completion. Furthermore, the percentage of incoming college freshman with disabilities has more than tripled since 1975, the year legislation was passed mandating appropriate public education for students with disabilities.

Converts online text into spoken words through the Awesome Talkster program. Awesome Talkster has one of the clearest synthesized voices on the Web.
Converting online text into speech has many uses. For example, Talkster can speak online stories or books to children while an adult supervises. The voice can be put in "Boy" or "Girl" mode to add a character with a bubble over his or her head. The bubble will show each word as it is spoken and the voice can be put on "slow" for your child to follow. Talkster can thereby assist your child in learning how to pronounce words while reading.
Talkster is also useful for adults. It can speak news articles to you in one open browser while you are searching for information in another browser window.

Graduate students are welcome at Acadia. They provide an important dimension to campus life. In a small, primarily undergraduate university, the presence of graduate students enriches the academic context and acts as an additional stimulus to faculty teaching and research. Acadia offers programs at the graduate level in selected areas. The university mission statement clearly states that only "rigorous programs" will be offered in those areas where the university "possesses distinctive scholarly and physical resources." Children with learning disabilities love Jazzles visual and aural aids...says this letter from an independent Occupational Therapist!
Are you looking for special education inclusion resources suitable for students with a developmental age of 5 upwards with learning disabilities or conditions such as:-
If so Jazzles Playful Phonics could help you. AND IF IT DOESN'T, I WILL GIVE YOU YOUR MONEY-BACK IMMEDIATELY, NO QUESTIONS ASKED.
    WHY?
Most children experiencing problems with structured learning, or who have physical and intellectual disabilities, love to hear stories and songs, particularly songs where they can move in rhythm to a beat! It calms and focuses them and helps enliven their imaginations and mold their ideas.
In particular, teaching children with learning differences always relies on visual and aural aids because talking alone does not communicate clearly enough.
That is why I was pleased to receive these two letters.

Slowly but surely, we FL teachers began to realize that not only was this elitist stance archaic and fallacious in light of modern learning theory, it was also detrimental to the students in our schools and to the FL profession as a whole (Grittner, 1973). First, we have come to realize and acknowledge that all students can learn other languages. Second, we maintain that they should learn FLs in order to be fully functional in the global society that is their future. Third, maintaining an elitist attitude about FL offerings has lead to hard times and low enrollments for FL professionals and may even lead to extinction for some study. Happily, most students now can take a foreign language at some point in their public school career, and they are being encouraged to do so in greater numbers than in the past. Students also are beginning to see the relevance of FLs in their lives, certainly in terms of the workplace and their own marketability and even as a valuable goal of lifelong learning. Sonja Moore of Virginia Commonwealth University has created a web page on the Internet that brings together a host of resources and information for FL teachers searching for assistance in dealing with students and their special needs. A Parent's Guide to Special Ed / Special Needs Glossary of Special Education Terms Prepared by Dr. Joy J. Rogers, Professor, Loyola University School of Education Achievement/ability discrepancy. A criterion often used to determine whether a child has a learning disability. It asks, is the child working up to expectations? One "formula" for determining the presence of a discrepancy has been promulgated by the Illinois State Board of Education. Some districts have developed their own. Some scholarly texts offer alternative formulae. ADA - Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. This law follows the principles established under Section 504. It provides for the protection from discrimination of persons with disabilities and allows claims for compensatory and punitive damages. Adaptive behavior. A sort of "practical intelligence." It is usually measured by scales that identify how well a person manages within his or her own environment. ADHD - Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder.

This article is one of a series of special invited manuscripts from leaders in the field of special education technology. JSET has invited experienced researchers and practitioners to share their current projects and speculate on important trends for the future. This forum will provide a distinct opportunity for sharing ideas and generating new directions for research and practice in special education technology.
It is true that change is inevitable, particularly in the field of technology. It is also true that some things do not change or they change more slowly, at least in our perceptions. In reflecting upon the first decades of our field and in attempting to suggest directions for the future it is instructive to try to tease out the differences between the two. What do we believe today that we believed at the dawn of the field of special education technology? What have we learned? Where should we go from here? To this end, this article considers the past, present, and the future of technology, with particular emphasis on one group of individuals: students with learning disabilities. It also focuses on my research interests and draws upon some of the studies that I've conducted over the years. For a more comprehensive historical view, readers are referred to Blackhurst and Edyburn (2000).
