Noah felt like he was always hitting the books. While his friends were meeting for pickup soccer games after school, he was back home in his room reading and rereading the same material. But no matter how hard Noah studied, he had difficulty remembering things and his grades stayed average. Meanwhile, his friend Sean, who never seemed to study, always aced tests. It didn't seem fair. Because Noah was so frustrated, his dad and teachers made an appointment with the school psychologist. She diagnosed Noah with a learning disability. Although Noah felt relieved to know what was going on, he was also worried. He didn't like the "disability" label. And he was concerned about what it might mean for his future. Would he be able to go to college and study engineering as he'd hoped? What Are Learning Disabilities?
For someone diagnosed with a learning disability, it can seem scary at first. But a learning disability doesn't have anything to do with a person's intelligence - after all, such successful people as Walt Disney, Alexander Graham Bell, and Winston Churchill all had learning disabilities. Learning disabilities are problems that affect the brain's ability to receive, process, analyze, or store information. These problems can make it difficult for a student to learn as quickly as someone who isn't affected by learning disabilities. There are many kinds of learning disabilities. Most students affected by learning disabilities have more than one kind. Certain kinds of learning disabilities can interfere with a person's ability to concentrate or focus and can cause someone's mind to wander too much. Other learning disabilities can make it difficult for a student to read, write, spell, or solve math problems.

V. References How Does One Identify the Learning Disabled Gifted?
It is difficult to describe or list typical characteristics of learning disabled gifted people because there are so many types of giftedness and so many possible learning disabilities. The biggest problem in identification is that a disability often masks or inhibits the expression of giftedness, so that it is difficult to tell whether a person's abilities are outstanding enough to indicate giftedness. On the other hand, giftedness can often mask the learning disability because the person's abilities can help him or her overcome or compensate for the disability. Some weaknesses that are observed more frequently than others in these children are the following: poor handwriting, poor spelling, lack of organizational ability, and difficulty in employing systematic strategies for solving problems. More frequently observed strengths are in speaking, understanding and identifying relationships, vocabulary, knowledge of information related to a wide variety of topics, and observational skills. In general, thinking and reasoning processes are often not impaired, but the mechanics involved in writing, reading, mathematics computation, and completing academic tasks often present great difficulties.

How schools use the learning disability label to cover up their failures. Schools get more money for these specialeducation kids but don’t spend
http://www.reason.com/0212/fe.ls.special.shtml
December 2002 Special Education Confidential
How schools use the "learning disability" label to cover up their failures.
By Lisa Snell
The handmade flashcards were not helping my nephew Clayton. My sister Linda confided: "He’s not reading. We practice, but he can’t remember the words the next time. He gets frustrated." Although it seemed overwhelming, Clayton’s problem was fairly simple. "If Clayton is reading the word cat ," Linda explained, "he just says the letters c, a, t . He doesn’t recognize the word." Clayton wasn’t connecting the letters to the sounds they represent. Children often are taught the names of letters first, which can make it hard to learn how they’re pronounced. For these kids, the letter c has no relationship to the sound k in cat Compounding the problem, Clayton’s kindergarten teacher was giving him word lists to memorize, failing to recognize that he didn’t know the basic letter sounds. She kept sending home new lists even though he hadn’t learned the words on the previous ones. It’s not surprising that Linda and Clayton were frustrated. I was worried for Clayton because I know what happens to kids when they don’t learn to read. Comprehensive research by the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development shows that children who cannot identify word sounds in kindergarten often cannot read by third grade. If Clayton failed to learn the relationship between letters and sounds in kindergarten, chances are he would be assigned to special education by fourth grade, which would spell his doom in the public school system. He probably would never become a proficient reader. Despite attending a solidly middle-class school, rated 7 out of 10 by the state of California, Clayton could easily end up as yet another child labeled "learning disabled" because his school failed to teach him how to read.
