'Helping' Gay Teens v. Helping Gay Teens
Terrance has a positive update on what I have less-than-affectionately termed the Love InAction story: "Love In Action . . . is under investigation for allegations of child abuse." He is able to find a Tennessee TV station , among other sources, that has covered the investigation into what it calls "a therapy group in Memphis that claims to turn gay teens into heterosexuals." The group, of course, has been hot in the blogosphere because of Zach, the teen whose blog has been discussed and linked to across the blogosphere Interestingly, a measure signed into law just last week by Gov. Phil Bredesen sounds like it could be tailor fit for the situation of teens like Zach. From an article (reg. req'd) in the (Memphis) Commercial Appeal Sen. Curtis Person, R-Memphis, who shepherded the bill through the Senate, called it a major reform for child protective services when it passed. "Right now, if there's an allegation of abuse or maltreatment and DCS investigates, no matter what conditions they find in the home that could lead to maltreatment, unless they find that the allegations are substantiated that is, that they find abuse or maltreatment has occurred they have to close the case," said Person, a longtime Shelby County Juvenile Court official.

Teens Having Sex
Katie Couric has a " Dateline " special to be broadcast Wednesday evening focusing in on the issue of teens and sex. The program allegedly will give parents the "411" on this touchy topic. Now, having seen this post from Brian , talking about teens having sex seems to be in vogue this week. Brian writes about a sociology study being promoted, "Chains of Affection: The Structure of Adolescent Romantic and Sexual Networks." The study is authored, in part, by an Ohio State professor named James Moody, and the group found through interviews with students at a high school in the Midwest this " structure of romantic relationships " although in the actual study it does make clear that both romantic and nonromantic sexual activity is represented in the diagram. (OSU news release A portion of the study has important implications for STD prevention and education. The researchers found that a remarkably large percentage of students were "connected" to one another through chains of sexual partners (see chart ) despite having few direct sexual partners. This portion of the article can be found below the jump.

Teens accused of beating man to death
PATERSON, New Jersey (CNN) Nine teenage boys accused of beating a man to death are to appear in court Tuesday, officials said. Hector Robles died after being attacked Wednesday on a sidewalk where he had been sitting, sipping beer. Paterson police described Robles as homeless, but said he sometimes went to homes of friends or relatives. The nine teenagers, ages 15 to 17, are mostly from John F. Kennedy High School, which had just dismissed classes for the summer Wednesday. Neighborhood witnesses told CNN that certain students traditionally mark the end of school with fights and rowdy behavior. The witnesses said groups of youths moved from the school down the street, harassing people who were alone and appeared defenseless. Robles was hit with a bottle and beaten, they said. Virginia Alcohol Laws and Parental Responsibility
As a parent of a high school junior or senior, your teen may soon be experiencing two of the most anticipated and rewarding events in his or her life: prom and graduation. However, what happens after these events can open the door to problems. Most teens don't stop celebrating when the prom is over and graduation ends; they attend parties. Most of you are aware that underage drinking often occurs at and after prom and graduation. You'd like your teen to have a good time and celebrate, but you also want them to be safe. As parents, you also need to be aware of the legal penalties for breaking underage drinking laws. The use of alcohol compromises your teen's safety and opens them and you to legal consequences. Fugitives said to be armed and dangerous
From staff and wire reports CONCORD, New Hampshire Police on Saturday said they were looking for two Vermont teen-agers charged in the murders of two Dartmouth College professors last month. Warrants were issued for Robert W. Tulloch, 17 and 16-year-old friend James J. Parker, both of Chelsea, Vermont, authorities said during a Saturday news conference. The pair, charged as adults with two counts of first-degree murder, should be considered armed and dangerous, police said. Authorities refused to discuss how they identified the suspects, a motive or any connection between the boys and the victims. New Hampshire State Police Col. Gary Sloper displayed photos of the two teens and expressed confidence that they would be caught. "We would encourage anyone who comes in contact with them should ... certainly not approach these individuals on their own."

Nissa Baillie, Thomas Miller and Christopher Cole each had been sentenced to 15 years in state prison. The case is believed to have been the first time the removal of a traffic sign led to a manslaughter conviction. The three were released on bail in October 2000 pending their appeal. A three-judge panel for the 2nd U.S. District Court of Appeals in Florida reversed the convictions of all three teens and ordered new trials. Defense attorneys argued that their clients should get new trials because new witnesses have come forward and because the original case was filled with misconduct by prosecutors.

December 2, 2004 EL PASO, Texas - Minors headed to Mexico for a night of drinking could be turned away at the border if El Paso city officials have their way.
The City Council will ask the Texas Legislature in its January session to approve a proposed measure allowing police to stop people under 18. While the aim is to stem teen drinking, critics say such a law would trample civil rights and may not do much good.
While police have long been aware of the problem they've had trouble stopping it, even with officers stationed at border bridges.

You and your teen need to know the basics of sex, teens and the law. Each state has laws that set the age at which someone can give consent to have sex, marry or seek medical care as an independent person. These laws are written to protect young teens from older people who force or pressure them to have sex. In many states it is illegal for a young teen to have sex with someone two or more years older, even if the younger teen consents to sex. The older person can be charged with statutory rape or other crimes.
