Fair Use Legislation Alerts, Opinion Summaries, Articles and More! Free Culture by Stanford Law Professor Lawrence Lessig Professor Lessig shows us that while new technologies always lead to new laws, never before have the big cultural monopolists used the fear created by new technologies, specifically the Internet, to shrink the public domain of ideas, even as the same corporations use the same technologies to control more and more what we can and can't do with culture. As more and more culture becomes digitized, more and more becomes controllable, even as laws are being toughened at the behest of the big media groups. What's at stake is our freedomfreedom to create, freedom to build, and ultimately, freedom to imagine. A free downloadable version of Professor Lessig's new book is available at http://free-culture.org/freecontent/

Posted on Thursday, September 08, 2005 Court Rules on Employer's Use of FLSA 'Half-Time' Pay Method Employers looking to limit payroll overtime costs may want to consider adopting the often-overlooked "fluctuating workweek" method of compensation in the wake of a federal court's recent ruling addressing the practice. Posted on Thursday, September 08, 2005 FLSA Recordkeeping Cases Hinge on 'Burden of Proof' Employers should note that in cases where work-time and payroll records are incomplete or inaccurate, courts often accept employee estimates of their uncompensated work hours and back pay due. The method courts use to decide Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) recordkeeping disputes is illustrated by a recent case decided by the U.S. District Court for Kansas. [Book Arts] Congratulations, Terry Belanger and Rare Book School
My news queue is so long at this point that I fear that I will never have time to catch up. But, j's post prompted me to mention a few important things.
As I am assuming most of you know, Terry Belanger, the founder and director of Rare Book School , was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship this week. I heard the good news as soon as I arrived at work on Tuesday and was very excited to read about it on the RBS website
Rare Book School has received many well-deserved honors this year. In June RBS received an IMLS grant to fund 50 scholarships for the upcoming year. So, if you have never been to Charlottesville, would like to learn about rare books and the book arts, and want to meet the "resident genius", you should consider applying for a scholarship . The application deadline is October 1.
And, since I am writing about RBS, I would also like to thank everyone there for helping me have an enjoyable and educational time in Charlottesville last
