44. Principles For Licensing Electronic Resources
The intent of this document is twofold to guide libraries in negotiating license agreements for access to electronic resources, and to provide licensors with a sense of the issues of importance to libraries and their user communities in such negotiations. Presented collectively by the American Association of law libraries, American Library Association, Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries, Association of Research Libraries, Medical Library Association, and Special Libraries Association.

PRINCIPLES FOR LICENSING ELECTRONIC RESOURCES
Introduction
License agreements are a fact of life in conducting business in the electronic environment. Providers of electronic information resources are employing licenses as a legal means of controlling the use of their products. In the electronic environment where the traditional print practice of ownership through purchase is being replaced by access through license, libraries need to be aware that licensing arrangements may restrict their legal rights and those of their users. As responsible agents for an institution, librarians must negotiate licenses that address the institution's needs and recognize its obligations to the licensor. To help provide guidance in this continuously evolving environment, the American Association of Law Libraries, American Library Association, Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries, Association of Research Libraries, Medical Library Association, and Special Libraries Association have combined to develop a statement of principles. These six associations represent an international membership of libraries of all types and sizes. The intent of this document is two-fold: to guide libraries in negotiating license agreements for access to electronic resources, and to provide licensors with a sense of the issues of importance to libraries and their user communities in such negotiations.

47. Conan The Librarian
Conan inhabits the mythical Information Age, where he is a typical reference librarian. His world nevertheless bears some strange similarities to our own. From the Minnesota Association of law libraries.
http://www.aallnet.org/chapter/mall/conan/conanhp.html
Conan the Librarian, by Hadley V. Baxendale The character of Conan the Librarian is a parody of Robert E. Howard's immortal character, Conan the Barbarian. He first appeared in 1987 in a skit performed by the library staff at the William Mitchell College of Law talent show. (The author's name should be familiar to all first-year law students.) He inhabits the mythical Information Age, where he is a typical reference librarian. His world nevertheless bears some strange similarities to our own. The original "Adventures of Conan the Librarian" is not currently available in electronic form. In the second tale, he journeys through lands and adventures recognizable to many law librarians. His third adventure takes him down the perilous Information Highway we all know and love. The Return of Conan the Librarian Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 ... Chapter 17 Conan the Librarian on the Information Highway Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 ... Chapter 25 The character of Conan the Librarian springs from the Jungian collective unconscious of information professionals. His legend is beyond the power of one bard to sing. Here are some other sightings of Conan on the Internet. The "real" Conan, selected links:
