41. The Constitution For Kids (8th-12th Grade) - The U.S. Constitution Online - USCo
Each state has its own constitution that is the highest law for the state but even then, The Constitution sets up three main branches of government.
http://www.usconstitution.net/constkids.html
This file is intended for students in grades 8 through 12. Other versions of this page are available: The impetus for this page was my daughter - in fourth grade, she was doing a research project on the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. A chip off the old block... but I realized that a lot of the information on the USConstitution.net web site was of a far too high level for her, or someone like her. I created this and the other related "Kids" pages to make this information more accessible to kids. If there is anything that this page could use to improve its mission, to serve children in search of information about the Constitution, please let The Webmaster know! The Basics Basically, the Constitution is the highest law in the United States. All other laws come from the Constitution in some way. The Constitution also provides a framework for the government of the United States. It creates things like the President, the Congress, and the Supreme Court. Each state has its own constitution that is the highest law for the state - but even then, the United States Constitution is higher. Over time, some things have been added to the Constitution. Called "amendments," these add-ons list some of the rights of the people. By listing these rights, they are made special, and it is illegal for the government to violate those rights. As of 2004, there are 27 amendments to the Constitution. Not all of them involve rights, but many do. The first ten amendments, in particular, have the special name of the Bill of Rights.

His father, who was born in Sicily and emigrated to the United States as a young man, was a professor of Romance languages. His mother, born to immigrant Italian parents, was a schoolteacher. As the first American of Italian heritage appointed to the Supreme Court, Scalia's ascent to the pinnacle of his profession was proclaimed by many as an example of the American dream. When Scalia"Nino" to his friendswas five years old, his father became a professor at Brooklyn College, and the family moved to Elmhurst, a section of Queens, New York. Growing up in New York was stimulating and challenging, particularly when Scalia carried the French horn he played in band to and from school on the subway during rush hour. He was a good student, first in public school in Queens and later at St. Francis Xavier, a military prep school in Manhattan, where he graduated first in his class. Jewish movements, often referred to as denominations, branches or sects of Judaism, differ from each other in some beliefs and thus in the way they observe Judaism. Differences between the movements, in contrast to differences between Christian denominations, derive from interpreting Jewish scriptures in more progressive/liberal or more traditional/conservative ways rather then from theological differences.
  • Reconstructionist Judaism
Reconstructionists believe that Judaism is an "evolving religious civilization." In one way it is more liberal than Reform Judaism - the movement does not believe in a personified deity that is active in history and does not believe that God chose the Jewish people. In another way Reconstructionist Judaism is less liberal than Reform Judaism - Reconstructionists observe halakhah Jewish Law) if they choose to, not because it is a binding Law from G-d, but because it is a valuable cultural remnant.

    Wendy's World- Three Branches
By Jane Runyon Wendy and her friends, Tim and Tess, were walking home from school. Tim and Tess were excited about getting home. They wanted to play with their new puppy, Stormy. Wendy was not in a hurry. She knew she had to study. She had a big test tomorrow. She was afraid she would not do well. Her teacher had talked about branches of government . She did not know what that meant.
Tess could see that her friend was worried. "I have an idea, Wendy," she said. "Let's ask the magic dice to help you."
"I wouldn't know what to wish for," sighed Wendy.
Tess thought a little while and then said, "Why don't you wish for someone to come and help you." "That might just work!" Wendy told her friend.

A year ago, long-time committed Christians, Michael and Krista Branch lived in a suburb of Colorado Springs with their three young children. Michael and Krista saw The Passion on its opening day. They were very moved by it and talked about it over the next few days. On Saturday Michael told his brother-in-law that he had been very struck by what Mary went through losing her son. AN ACCIDENT
Sunday morning the two older kids were in their high chairs. Michael was doing work on his computer, and Krista decided to bathe Kenna, as she was messy from a runny nose. Normally, they unscrew the stopper from the tub and let all three kids play in the shower. In the hurry to get ready for church, they neglected to unscrew the stopper and just pulled it out instead. Krista didn't realize that Kenna had sat on the stopper and pushed it down so the tub was slowly filling with water. Krista washed Kenna off and left her to play in the tub. Michael called Krista to help him access a Web site on their computer. As Krista helped her husband, she listened to Kenna and went back into the bathroom to check on her several times. Then Krista was out of the bathroom for perhaps four minutes. When Krista went back into the bathroom, she saw about four inches of water in the tub and yanked back the shower curtain to see Kenna floating face down. Krista was sure Kenna was dead.

    http://www.kids.state.ct.us/government/about.htm
Connecticut's Government Governments are based on a plan and Connecticut's Constitution creates the plan for our government. All the information that anyone needs about how government works is contained in that document. The Constitution that we use today was written in 1965. Today, the government works in very much the same way it did over three hundred and fifty years ago. Government has become more complicated over those years, but is still based on the important idea that people give the government its political power. Our Constitution says that all free governments are based on that idea. The Constitution also divides that power into three parts or branches of government, the Legislative Branch, the Executive Branch, and the Judicial Branch. The Legislative Branch The Connecticut Legislature is made up of the men and women of our state who come together to write new laws and change laws that were written in the past. The legislature is called the General Assembly and is made up of two separate groups or "houses."

    Plyler vs. Doe: The Solution
By Howard Sutherland [Part Two Of A Two Part Series: See Part One: 02/10/03 - America Educating The World–At Taxpayer Expense, by Howard Sutherland Behind truly insane public policy mandates in the United States, you often find the U.S. Supreme Court, willfully misinterpreting the Constitution to reach the political result favored by a majority of the justices. Many of the Supreme Court’s most overreaching decisions have involved the 14 th Amendment. For over 30 years, Justice William Brennan–a New Jersey native–was one of the Court’s most inventive and reliably liberal judicial legislators. The “constitutional right” of illegal aliens to public schooling at Americans’ expense is one of the many “implied rights” Brennan discovered, hidden deep between the Constitution’s inky lines. He manufactured this novel entitlement in his opinion for narrow a 5-4 majority in Plyler v. Doe

Specific Home School Statutes: None. Alternative Statutes Allowing for Homeschools:
Section 26-1 : "Any child attending a private or a parochial school where children are taught the branches of education taught to children of corresponding age and grade in the public schools, and where the instruction of the child in the branches of education is in the English language" is in compliance with the Illinois compulsory attendance law and is therefore not truant. According to People vs Levisen , a homeschool is a private school if it does those things that private schools are required to do. There are no academic requirements for private schools in Illinois. However, as noted above, parents must send children to a school that teaches in the branches of education and in the English language, therefore your homeschool must do that. NOTE: Students using American Sign Language (ASL) are considered as being taught in English. Children for whom English is a second language must still be taught in English. Of course, in addition to teaching the branches of education in English you may teach anything else including the branches in any language(s) you choose.

    About Juvenile Law Center
Our Mission: Juvenile Law Center ensures that the child welfare, juvenile justice and other public systems provide vulnerable children with the protection and services they need to become happy, healthy and productive adults.
Founded in 1975 as a non-profit legal service, Juvenile Law Center (JLC) is one of the oldest children's rights organizations in the United States. JLC has always maintained a core mission of protecting and advancing children's rights. We do this by ensuring that children are treated fairly by systems that are supposed to help them, and that children receive the treatment and services that these systems are supposed to provide. We believe that justice can be promoted by procedural safeguards, which help ensure that decisions about children are better informed, more accurate and most appropriate. We are particularly concerned that the juvenile justice and child welfare systems be used only when necessary, and that children who are served by those systems receive adequate education, and physical and mental health care. JLC's staff attorneys concentrate their efforts to protect children while reforming the systems meant to serve them, by engaging in the following efforts:
    • litigating key cases in state and federal court, including appellate advocacy;
