Consul, who has practiced in Nevada since 1981 in the areas of probate, personal injury, criminal defense and civil litigation, said the state's legal industry has been ripe with opportunities for lawyers since he began practicing here. He said the industry has grown along with the state's population, and as a result the State Bar of Nevada has had to operate in a more businesslike manner. Currently, there are 5,500 lawyers actively practicing in Nevada, he said. When he started there were 2,000. Consul said he began practicing law in Nevada following two summers of internships in Las Vegas. Consul graduated from the University of the Pacific/McGeorge Law School in Sacramento. He said at the time there were few opportunities for new lawyers in Northern California. "California was overrun with lawyers," Consul said. "Lawyers were driving taxicabs and tending bars. I had worked two summers, the summers of '78 and '79 down here in Las Vegas. That was my initial exposure here. I just saw the opportunity. There were lots of jobs for lawyers. I came here and had basically three job offers in the same day, which was unheard of in California."
