Law Week 2004
A Lawyer or Judge in Every School
April 26-30
Law Week 2004 is an exciting opportunity for lawyers and judges to bring public legal education into the classroom. Each year, Law Week provides an enriching experience to youth through positive interactions with lawyers and judges. Last May, nearly 6,000 Washington students, 27 judges and more than 200 lawyers participated in Law Week. Lawyers and judges in 31 Washington counties met with students to discuss current legal issues and specific areas of the law. Some presentations also included mock trials in which students played all the courtroom roles. Seattle lawyer Ron Bemis, the statewide chair for Law Week 2001, said,"In just one day or less during Law Week, every lawyer and judge in Washington has a truly rewarding opportunity to give back to their local communities, to enrich the lives of students, and to personally contribute to better public legal education." Wenatchee lawyer Russell Speidel has been the driving force behind Law Week activities in Chelan and Douglas counties. "Law Week presentations provide students with a deeper understanding of the Constitution, the legal system and the foundation of citizenship. It's exciting to see kids get so involved in their rights and responsibilities as citizens," he said. Law Week is one of the many Washington State Bar Association programs designed to increase citizen understanding of the important role that the law plays in their lives. Washington's Law Week coincides with the American Bar Association's Law Day, celebrated on May 1st across the country. Law Day was established in 1958 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to strengthen the United States' heritage of liberty, justice and equality under the law.

Return to Articles
Abstract In this article I argue that greater attention should be given to the law-related education dimension of social studies education. I posit that a basic understanding of law and its role in society and in our lives is fundamental to the social studies citizenship mandate. Law-related education may be incorporated in elementary social studies in several different ways: highlighting the legal aspect of a topic or theme found in the social studies curriculum; using legal procedures as strategies for addressing social studies topics and promoting critical thinking objectives; using law as a way to integrate social studies with language arts; and modeling and practicing law-related principles through the informal curriculum of school policies and practices. When elementary teachers are asked if they teach law, they usually say something like: "Pardon me? Law? Of course not! I'm a teacher not a lawyer." Yet everyday in classrooms and on school playgrounds, teachers and students encounter law-related issues.

Did Jack break the law?:
Simplified Mock Trial
Updated June 15, 1998 SUBJECT: Law
GRADE(S): 1-3 (or older grades inexperienced with mock trials)
DESCRIPTION: conducting a simplified mock trial in a classroom, based on "Jack and the Beanstalk".
DURATION: 45 minutes
LANGUAGE: English (can easily be adapted to the language of the classroom)
AUTHOR: ACJNet, adapted from "Mock Trial Building Blocks," Resource News , October 1985.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE(S): At the end of this lesson, students should be able to...
  • identify the process for settling a legal dispute (how are the facts of the case presented; how is the dispute resolved)
  • identify key players in a legal dispute (who presents the facts; who makes the final decision)
  • determine what makes a decision fair.
FORMAT:
Small group deliberation in simplified mock-trial format; class is divided into three groups for mock trial; groups of three, one each acting as judge, accused and accuser, or whole class, for summary discussion.
BACKGROUND:
A full-scale mock trial can be an intimidating prospect for an elementary classroom-both for teacher and students. This lesson plan for a simplified mock-trial provides an opportunity to experience the fundamentals of a trial. Beginning with a cast of three characters, students will develop skills that will lead them safely into more complicated cases. The basic tenets of the lesson include those items covered in the learning objectives. Understanding that the purpose of a trial is to settle a dispute between two people, the two parties are given an opportunity to present their side of the story to a judge. With the final authority resting with him/her, the judge takes some time to clarify issues with each party and then makes a decision that is seen to be fair to each party. Without distinguishing between civil and criminal issues, this lesson illustrates the essentials of our adversary system: that each party is allowed to tell his/her side of the story, that the judge is the person with the authority to settle the dispute, that a fair decision is presented with reasons supporting that decision.

A Violence Prevention Program Focusing on Conflict Resolution and Peer Mediation In today's society when students can arrive at school carrying weapons rather than schoolbooks, the New Jersey State Bar Foundation is seizing the opportunity to promote violence prevention by helping interested schools establish Conflict Resolution and Peer Mediation Programs. Conflict Resolution and Peer Mediation Guides
Developed by the Foundation's Conflict Resolution Curriculum Panel, which is comprised of educators, these guides contain lesson plans and student handouts aimed at issues such as resolving conflict, developing listening skills, dealing with peer pressure, managing anger and developing peer mediation programs. Available in elementary, middle and high school levels, the lessons demonstrate how students can take appropriate steps to prevent a potentially harmful situation. Each guide is accompanied by a colorful poster depicting the "Win/Win" guidelines for resolving conflicts. The guides are free and have been distributed to schools since the program's inception in 1994.
