Separation within Russian Orthodoxy
CONCERNING THE UNANIMOUSLY DESIRED RESTORATION OF A UNIFIED RUSSIAN CHURCH Bishop Evtikhii of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad (RPTsZ) issued a pastoral letter (dated 1998) that cleary summarizes the oft-repeated points of the conflict that continues to separate Russian Orthodox from each other. Latvia Update
09 June 2004
INTRODUCTION
Latvia has made a rapid transformation after the collapse of the Soviet Union. In late March 2004 Latvia was welcomed as a NATO member and as a new member of the EU on May 1, the same year. Latvia inherited a large Russian minority on its territory from the Soviet epoch, which encounters now huge difficulties integrating into the Latvian society. The wide spread corruption remains as well one of Latvia’s main problems to be solved.

ELECTIONS AND POLITICAL SITUATION
Parliamentary Elections
Since Latvia gained independence in1991 from the collapsing Soviet Union its political climate was marked by chronic political instability and was subject to political crises. In eleven years Latvia has held four elections and has witnessed no less than 9 different governments that have always been centre-right coalitions. It is also remarkable that only newly fledged political parties formed some months before the elections tended to gain the majority of votes.
On October 5, 2002 - two months before the Copenhagen European Council during which the Fifteen member States were to decide which countries would integrate the EU from 2004 onwards, Latvians were to elect their 8th Saeima (Parliament).

does religion promote or subvert civil society Making Democracy Work Alexis de Tocquille Democracy in America The independence of Lithuania was the outset of religious freedom too. During the first period of the postcommunist transformation the increased importance of the religion met with popular support. On the one hand this can be explained as a reaction to the political persecution of religion in the soviet period, and on the other as a search for support in the changing reality. In the outset of postcommunist reform democracy and religions was closely linked concepts. There was a great enthusiasm about the prosperity of civil society and religious values. Lithuania reestablished independence thirteen years ago. And I can state with certainty that nowadays Lithuanian society is very different from the expectations at the dawn of the transformations. Of course, there were a lot of changes in the material prosperity and in the life-styles, but we also have to aknowledge that posttotalitarian society is very different from our dreams about civil society and religion became the traditional decor of our life rather than vital force. We still talk a lot about civil society, religion, but these are only talks without any commitment.
