Cultural Heritage Theatre, film and photography are also areas where Latvian artists have made an international mark. Ten professional theatres currently exist in Latvia, but the National Theatre was actually the site where Latvia's independence was proclaimed in 1918. Latvian photographers, including Janis Klavins, Viesturs Links and Peteris Jaunzems have won top awards in international photography competitions in the past few years. While the origins of Latvian cinematography date back to the 1920's, the first full length Latvian film was "Zvejnieka dels" (The Fisherman's Son) produced in 1940. Documentaries have had special success and the most famous documentary producers include the Juris Podnieks (well known for documentaries such as "The Soviets", and "Krustacels" (the Stations of the Cross)), Ivars Seleckis for "Skersiela" (Crossroads) and Herc Franks for "Augstaka tiesa" (The Supreme Court). The state owned Riga Film studio once produced several feature films each year, but with the collapse of the Soviet cinematography system and full state funding, the studio is now struggling to survive.

100 most endangered heritage sites in Latvia The cultural heritage represents material or non-material evidence of human mental activity. The cultural heritage includes the works of artists, architects, musicians, writers and scientists, as well as those of anonymous artists, an expression of the human spirit and a system of values that gives life meaning. In European practice, the cultural heritage sector covers the protection of immovable and movable cultural monuments and the evidence associated with their survey, study, recording, conservation and utilisation of them and their inclusion in the processes of contemporary life. Within this programme, the cultural heritage consists of:
· the architectural heritage
· the archaeological heritage
· the monumental, sacred and applied arts heritage
· the industrial heritage
· the underwater heritage The largest and most readily perceived part of the cultural heritage consists of cultural monuments: historical landscapes and particular territories, historic urban centres (pre-Christian and Christian cemeteries, parks and the sites of historical events and places where prominent people have worked),as well as groups of buildings, separate buildings and structures, works of art, furnishings and objects having historic, scientific, artistic or other cultural value and whose preservation for future generations is in the interest of the country and people of Latvia and the international community.

Andrejs Vasks THE CULTURAL AND ETHNIC SITUATION IN LATVIA DURING THE EARLY AND MIDDLE IRON AGE (1st - 8th Century AD) During the early Iron Age, there were several large regions in what is now Latvia where populations were linked more closely by various economic, personal, religious and, one can assume, adminstative and political contacts. Strengthening of these links facilitated the cultural heterogeneity of various regions within the territory, something that presumably was also caused by ethnic differences. These differences were manifested in burial traditions, ornamentation, and occasionally in tools and pottery. It should be noted that none of these regions lay entirely within Latvia each of them also covered some territory in neighboring countries. The northernmost border of the Latvian territory which was occupied by the ancestors of the Curonians cannot be specified with any precision. Judging from the distribution of gravesites, it probably did not stretch much beyond the Durbe lake. The discovery of a few scattered sites allows specialists to move the border a bit further to the North, perhaps to Kazdanga. Even farther to the North up to the Abava river and the Lower Venta, there is a broad zone in which archaeologists have found no traces of the early Iron Age. Apparently this was a sparsely populated region which separated Balts to the South from Baltic Finns to the North. In the territory which was populated by the ancestors of Curonians, no paleoanthropological materials from the early Iron Age have been discovered, so there is no possibility to provide a physical characterization of the inhabitants from that time. Based on various indirect evidence, we can conclude that the ancestors of the Curonians had a gracile and narrow-faced anthropological type (Èesnis1985).

The year of 1991 is crucial in the fate of Latvia. It is the year of regaining our country's independence from the Communist regime. Since then fundamental changes have taken place in the country's economical, political and educational structure. The present paper covers the issue of international cultural studies at a tertiary level and their significance in the contemporary educational system. The comprehension of a foreign language and another nation's culture deepens one's insight and changes one's attitude in reference to human life's individual and societal aspects. Through the revelation of any otherness one's apprehension of culture and the ideas in reference to the forms of human existence become richer. A deeper understanding grasps a sense at a definite time, in association with another man, his world. The process of mutual understanding becomes deeper if both partners understand and respect each other. "Understanding in its essence is a dialogue" as Latvian philosophers Maija and Rihards Kuli hold in accordance with other contemporary philosophers.
