Language and Culture
The Latvian language, like Lithuanian, belongs to the Baltic branch of the Indo-European family of languages. Latvian is an inflective language, written in the Latin script and influenced syntactically by German. The oldest known examples of written Latvian are from catechisms published in 1585. Because of the heavy influx of ethnic Russians and other Slavs after World War II, nearly one-half of the country's population does not speak Latvian (see table 22, Appendix). Most ethnic Latvians speak Russian, however, and many also know German (see table 23, Appendix). Latvian culture is strongly influenced by folklore and by the people's attachment to their land. Christian rituals often are intermingled with ancient customs, and pagan geometric symbols remain evident in the applied arts. Ancient folksongs, or dainas , that were first collected and published in the mid-nineteenth century, most notably by Krisjanis Barons, are a cultural treasure. In 1888 the great epic poem Lacplesis (Bear Slayer) by Andrejs Pumpurs was published, marking the dawn of modern Latvian literature. Janis Rainis (1865-1929) usually tops the list of Latvia's greatest writers. One of the most prominent figures in Latvian literature today is the poet Imants Ziedonis, who also has established a fund to promote the development of Latvian culture.

Industrial Heritage in Latvia Andris Biedrins, March 2002
Brief historical report of industry
Latvia was ever predominantly an agrarian country. Nevertheless industry reach extreme flourishing at the turn of the XIX and XX centuries as well as after Second World War. Seaports Riga and Liepaja became the most important industrial towns not only in Latvia but also in Russian empire. Sometime the development of industry in Riga has compared with Munich in Germany and Riga was called "Russian Munich".
Unfortunately, historians have touched upon issue on development of industry in Latvia only casually. The main publications on this issue have written in German, Russian and Latvian. Thanks to activities of The Riga's Technical Society (Technichen Verein zu Riga) we have rich information about starting and flourishing of the industry in Riga in second half of XIX century and in beginning of XX century. Books "Riga und Seine Bauten" (1903), "Beitrage zur Geschichte der Industrie Rigas" ( 1910-1912) and an excellent journal "Rigasche Industry Zeitung" are published by this Society.
Unfortunately nearly whole information has focused on Riga in these sources. Statistic materials about industrial development of Russian Baltic provinces we can find in Russian sources. We have no special publications on subject of industrial history during time of the first Latvia's independence (1918-1940). After Second World War so called "Soviet historians" their research work focused mainly on workers living conditions and revolutionary movement. As exception, could be mentioned some chapters in History of Riga 1860-1917 published by Institute of History in 1978, which contains useful information for our subject.

    Cultural Activities in Riga, Latvia
Meeting.lv Cultural Activities Riga will surely impress demanding tourists with its excellent and eclectic theatre and concert life, unique museums, and outstanding exhibitions. Museums Riga has over 50 museums. While you may not be able to visit all 50, you should pay particular attention to the following: The History of Riga and Navigation Museum next to Dome Cathedral provides tourists with a good understanding of Latvian history, from the medieval era through reformation and to modern independence. The Pauls Stradins Museum of Medicine follows the history of medicine starting from ancient times. The museum’s many exhibits, numerous mannequins and life-sized interiors are interactive. Visitors are able to “walk” around medieval towns, visit real drug-stores and hospitals, while dashing away from plague-sufferers. The Ethnographic Open Air Museum is located on a vast outdoor park, as its name suggests. Situated on the outskirts of Riga along a beautiful lakeshore, the museum represents a collection of natural buildings, including peasant houses, hangars, churches and windmills that were gathered from each of Latvia’s regions and reassembled in the park. In this sense, the park is something like a miniature Latvia. Artisans work throughout the park during the summer, producing beautiful, traditional handicrafts while you watch. The museum provides a wonderful opportunity to combine a stroll through a picturesque park, while absorbing the traditional Latvian lifestyle and buying handicrafts directly from the artisans.

Lights! Camera! Baltic! – The History and Significance of Film in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania Introducing…Baltic Film Film is an expressive tool. It tells stories, educates, entertains, motivates, evokes emotion, it surprises, terrifies or saddens. It can either be a vehicle to escape everyday life for a while, or forces back to reality. Universally, it seems cinema is culturally significant in nearly every country, the Baltic States being no exception. Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania all possess a long history of innovative cinematography, influential filmmakers, and thought-provoking, award-winning films. Latvia is well known for documentaries. Estonia is thought to be an innovator of animation. Lithuania has a reputation for producing art-house, marginal films. In whatever medium used, all three nations have used films in an influential and political means and to raise a voice even when it was forbidden under Soviet rule. Cinema was artfully used to demonstrate the apprehension, excitement, and curiosity about the changing state of being upon independence in 1991.

A small Finno-Ugric tribe known as the Livs settled among the Latvians and modulated the name to "Latvis," meaning "forest-clearers," which is how medieval German settlers also referred to these peoples. The German colonizers changed this name to "Lette" and called their initially small colony "Livland." The Latin form, "Livonia," gradually referred to the whole of modern-day Latvia as well as southern Estonia, which had fallen under German dominion. Latvians and Lithuanians are the only directly surviving members of the Baltic peoples and languages of the Indo-European family.
Latvians look like and consider themselves Nordics, evidenced through the strong cultural and religious influences gained over centuries during Germanic and Scandinavian colonization and settlement. Eastern Latvia (Latgale), however, retains a strong Polish and Russian cultural and linguistic influence. This highly literate society places strong emphasis upon education, which is free and compulsory until age 16. Most Latvians belong to the Evangelical Lutheran Church; a sizable minority are Russian Orthodox, and Eastern Latvia is predominantly Roman Catholic.
