I. Introductory
Elementary Latin
Introduction to the language. Readings in classical prose and poetry. Mr. Pounder. Open to all classes; four 50-minute periods.
II. Intermediate
Either Latin 210 or Latin 215 may be taken as a requisite for Latin 220. Both are introductions to the reading of Latin authors but Latin 210 begins with a concentrated review of grammar whereas Latin 215 proceeds immediately to the reading of Latin texts and incorporates grammatical review with the readings themselves. Latin 210 is recommended for students who for any reason would benefit from an overview of Latin grammar in order to refresh their skills before proceeding to the translation of Latin authors. Students should speak to the chair of the department if they are unsure about which course to choose.
Reading Latin]
A thorough review of Latin grammar followed by an introduction to the reading of continuous, unadapted Latin prose and poetry of the Republican era. Readings are selected to illustrate a variety of literary forms and styles as well as significant aspects of Roman culture. Successful completion of the course qualifies students for Latin 220. More And Less Pig Latin On The Web
Thursday, March 15, 2001
By Applelinks Contributing Editor Charles W. Moore As we told you on Tuesday, Toronto-based Napcameback.com has developed software that enables users to mask and unmask their MP3 files whenever they want, using Pig Latin-inspired encryption. Users' files are renamed with Pig latin names to be shared with other Napcameback.com users. For more information, visit:
Napcameback.com: http://www.napcameback.com The Aimster file-sharing service that piggybacks on America Online's Instant Messaging system, also developed software that gave users a Pig Latin-style bypass of Napster filters, but according to Insert link name here Napster leaned on Aimster to ban the Pig Encoder, and Aimster has complied, explaining that it did so "out of respect for Napster's efforts to maintain its own service for its own users as it deems best," but only after receiving a number of "public and private threats." According to The Register, NapCameBack Encoder remained operational at the time the story was filed.

Spanish Language and Literature
world. In the New World the Indian languages have reacted somewhat upon the Spanish vocabulary. There are a great many other medial consonant combinations. Notable are the changes of ct to ch (pronounced as in English "church"; nox, noctem, Span. noche), of l + consonant to u + consonant (alter, alterum, Span. otro though X autro X outro) or to a palatalization of the consonant ( multum , Span. mucho , with ch like that in English "church"), of ly to j ( cilia , Span. ceja ) of ny to palatalized n (written n cuneus -um , Span. cuno etc.). The variations in the cases of consonant combinations containing l have not yet been properly studied. Of the final consonants usual in Latin s and n remain, the former especially inflexion; t, d, and c were lost (amat, Span. ama; amant, aman; est, Span. es; ad, Span. a; nec, Span. ni). A further peculiarity of Spanish is its possession of two verbs "to have", tener and haber, of which the latter can appear only as the auxiliary of perfect tenses or as the impersonal verb (hay, "there is", "there are", habia, "there was", "there were", etc.) and of two verbs "to be", ser and estar, which are likewise kept apart in their uses (ser indicates permanency and estar only transiency when they predicate a quality; estar alone can be employed where physical situation is concerned; etc.). A striking syntactical fact in Spanish is the employment of the preposition, a "to", or "at", before the noun (or any pronoun except the conjunctive personal pronoun) denoting a definite personal object (veo al hombre, "I see the man"). The word-order is rather lax as compared with that existing in the sister-languages.

139. Magical Realism Was The Term Utilized To Describe Latin American Literature Duri
An article focused on this term which describes some latin American writers during the 1960s.
http://www.mccallie.org/language/rnorment/magical_realism.htm
Magical realism was the term utilized to describe Latin American literature during the 1960s. According to some critics, magical realism is what differentiates the Latin American novel of El boom with the European and English-language novels. Magical realism, the combination of the real with the magical, is the opposite of Social Realism. Jorge Luis Borges gave the definition of magical realism when he said, "I imagine a labyrinth of labyrinths, one sinuous spreading labyrinth that would encompass the past and the future and in some way involve the stars" (Martin 3). The primary examples of magical realism are Alejo Carpentier, Miguel Angel Asturias, Juan Rulfo, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Magical realism has provided for many authors a form of expression with which to fashion a more original and exact national identity. In the introduction of his novel El reino de este mundo The kingdom of this World ), Carpentier mentioned that magical realism defines the more effective way of seeing Latin American history. According to the critic William Rowe, the "main characteristic of the marvellous in the real is the way in which European myths and dreams, from the Fountain of Eternal Youth to Surrealism's desire to make dream reality, have found their real counterparts in Latin America" (506). When the writer uses the technique of magical realism, he tries to give magic the status of reality. Works like Asturias's
