Mirabilis.ca is temporarily out of order Well, this is annoying: my blogging software, Movable Type, seems to have packed it in, and I can't post anything using that software. Argh! We're at the cottage now, where we have only dialup internet access, and limited patience for computer goop. When we go home (probably Sept 5th or so) I'll get this fixed one way or another. Seems like a good time to switch to better blogging software, hmmm? So anyway, there won't be updates here until I get things fixed. If you want to know when things get back to normal around here (without checking the site every day) keep an eye on the RSS feed , or just drop me a note and say that you'd like to be informed when things are all back to normal. Until now, art historians knew only that the large block came from the Carrara quarries in Tuscany, which still produce many types and qualities of marble.

102. Proposal For "Latin Language And Latin Culture"

Proposal for a volume to appear in the series
ÒRoman Literature and its ContextsÓ
Working title: ÒLatin Language and Latin CultureÓ
Joseph Farrell
, University of Pennsylvania
Introduction
The subject of the book is the Latin language as a context for literature. By this I do not mean the linguistic or aesthetic properties of the language so much as the characteristics that have been and are imputed to it as a cultural artifact in its own right (e.g. that it is a ÒlearnedÓ language, that it is difficult to acquire and use properly, that it is nevertheless not so ÒrichÓ a language as, especially, Greek, that is seen alternately as a pagan and as an ecclesiastical language, that it has generally been taken to be the province of men, not of women, etc.). My intent is to explore the ways in which the tendency of readers to impute these qualities to the language affects their understanding of Latin literature. This proposal consists of a complete preliminary draft of Chapter 1 , tentatively entitled ÒThe Nature of Latin CultureÓ , and a short outline of the rest of the book as I currently envision it . (Of the subsequent chapters a quantity of text perhaps equivalent to the first chapter already exists, but it is in rather rough condition, not yet ready to be seen.) Chapter 1 is intended both to suggest the range of topics I will address in the book and to give an idea of my working method. I stress the continuity of Latin culture from antiquity down to the present day, though not in the way this is usually done. The argument develops through alternate passages of rather large-scale cultural critique and close readings of various texts of all sorts from different periods.

114. CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Slavonic Language And Liturgy
Although the latin holds the chief place among the liturgical languages in which the Mass is celebrated and the praise of God recited in the Divine Offices, yet the Slavonic language comes next to it among the languages widely used throughout the world in the liturgy of the Church.

Slavonic Language and Liturgy
Although the Latin holds the chief place among the liturgical languages in which the Mass is celebrated and the praise of God Later on St. Methodius translated the entire Bible into Slavonic and his disciples afterwards added other works of the Greek saints and the canon law. These two brother saints always celebrated Mass and administered the sacraments in the Slavonic language. News of their successful missionary work among the pagan Slavs was carried to Rome along with complaints against them for celebrating the rites of the Church in the heathen vernacular. In 868 Saints Cyril and Methodius were summoned to Rome by Nicholas I , but arriving there after his death they were heartily received by his successor Adrian II , who approved of their Slavonic version of the liturgy. St. Cyril died in Rome in 869 and is buried in the Church of San Clemente. St. Methodius was afterwards consecrated Archbishop of Moravia and Pannonia and returned thither to his missionary work. Later on he was again accused of using the heathen Slavonic language in the celebration of the Mass and in the sacraments. It was a popular idea then, that as there had been three languages, Hebrew, Greek, and Latin, inscribed over our Lord on the cross, it would be sacrilegious to use any other language in the service of the Church. St.Methodius appealed to the pope and in 879 he was again summoned to Rome, before

Latin Literature in Christianity (Sixth to Twentieth Century)
During the Middle Ages the so-called church Latin was to a great extent the language of poetry, and it was only on the advent of the Renaissance that classical Latin revived and flourished in the writings of the neo-Latinists as it does even today though to a more modest extent. To present to the reader an account of Latin poetry in a manner at once methodical and clear is not an easy task; a strict adherence to chronology interferes with clearness of treatment, and an arrangement according to the different kinds of poetry would demand a repeated handling of some of the poets. However, the latter method is preferable because it enables us to trace the historical development of this literature. A. The Latin Drama Both in its inception and its subsequent development Latin dramatic poetry displays a peculiar character. "In no domain of literature", says W. Creizenach in the opening sentence of his well-known work on the history of the drama "do the Middle Ages show so complete a suspension of the tradition of classical antiquity as in the drama." Terence was indeed read and taught in the schools of the
