New August 18, 2005: LECTOR 0.993 translation program uploaded!
Welcome! Salve! This is the home page of Abram Ring , a graduate student and teaching assistant in classics at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville. He was born on Valentine's Day, 1977. I have some interest in translating and reading old languages which most people think are very obscure.
TECERTEESSEINSANUMSIHOCLEGERETEMPTESEXISTIMOSEDTEMULTUMLAUDO. Somehow I find myself reading Latin and Greek and enjoying it. It is exciting to get inside the mind of somebody writing 2000 years ago. Imagine yourself reading a speech written before the birth of Christ by Cicero, the most eloquent Roman orator, or reading Julius Caesar's own account of the wars that he fought or reading the original story that inspired Alexander the Great to overthrow the grand Persian Empire with a relatively small army. My Latin Links Cotidiana Latina (Everyday Latin) Colores Latini (Latin Colors) Cantica Latina (Latin Songs) ... Download LATNLINK or LECTOR, my programs which aid you in reading Latin.

http://languages.duke.edu/classical.html
Website: http://www.duke.edu/web/classics/ugrads/latin-greek.html Interested in learning Greek or Latin? Greek and Latin, both the languages of the literature, are the source of Western Civilization. Latin forms the basis of the romance languages (French, Italian, and Spanish, etc.) Knowledge of either ancient language, with their detailed and logical grammars, makes learning any other language easier. A good deal of English vocabulary derives from Greek and Latin, especially in Science (e.g. "physics"), technology ("telephone"), and law ("justice", "habeas corpus"). The literature of the Greeks and Romans is the starting point of Western thought. It is hard to imagine what our thinking would be like without the philosophy of Plato and St. Augustine, the dramas of Sophocles and Seneca, the storytelling of Homer and Vergil, the courtroom arguments of Demostheses and Cicero, the mathematical discoveries of Euclid and Archimedes, or the medical investigations of Hippocrates and Galen. Modern authors from Dante and Milston to Darwin and Eliot have regularly turned to the classical texts as building blocks for their own new houses. The modern world prizes critical acumen, clarity and precision in speech and writing. These were the qualities of language and thought that the Greeks and Romans prized.
