A selection of interesting Latin texts with literary commentary, from Plautus and Cato through the Augustan Poets to Petronius and Augustine. These are ideal for the person interested in pursuing a Reading Knowledge of Latin, and range from very easy readings to the high art of the great poets.
"The Intelligent Person's Guide to Latin"

Whether reviewing or resuming Latin, you should find this book a guiding torch in the penumbral areas of Latin Grammar. Many who learned their Latin lesson-by-lesson with Wheelock have found this readable "Treatise" a needed clarification and remedy for un-integrated Latin teaching. Comes with a CD dictionary and Latin texts for offline use..

This electronic DICTIONARY has a 5000 word vocabulary which will cover general Latin reading. The READER has about 2.3 meg of Latin texts which can be used on your monitor along with the dictionary, offline without line connections to the internet from the CD. For more information...

62. THE INTELLIGENT PERSON'S GUIDE TO THE LATIN LANGUAGE
Latin Grammar A commonsense Guide for serious amateurs of Latin and reviewing students who need mentoring.
http://community.middlebury.edu/~harris/Classics/LatinGrammar.html
The original "Intelligent Person's Guide to Latin" from l996 was widely used and many people found it clarified points of Latin grammar which had seems mysterious before. It was taken off the Web in December 00, when I started to revise it to make considerable additions to the text. I added hundreds of authentic examples from Latin authors for virtually every detail of the revised Grammar. But most important is the current work on Sentence Construction or the traditional "Syntax", which I have always felt needed a completely new approach.
  • Intelligent Person's Guide to Latin Now published in book form, information....
  • There is a considerable difference between the way English and Latin sentences unfold, and the greatest stumbling block to reading Latin is always the structure of our intuitive sense English, which makes Latin prose periods seem obscure and idiosyncratic. I have paid close attention to English as a preface to reading Latin, with the hope that more linguistic sense of the structure of English, as well as suspension of parallel translation when reading, will aid in reaching toward a Reading Knowledge of Latin. I seriously recommend the following essay for teachers and students alike, since it presents material you will not find elsewhere in print.
  • English and Latin Grammar .... as prolegomena to Latin.

Editorial October 2003 by: Terrence Moore Latin is a dead language. No one speaks Latin as his native language, and this has been the case for more than a millennium. In fact most teachers of Latin, even very good ones, cannot say more than a few sentences of Latin in succession. Latin has not been required for admissions into American universities for more than a century. Even Harvard, whose motto is "Veritas" (Truth) and The University of Chicago, whose motto is "Crescat scientia vita excolatur" (Let learning increase and thereby life be enriched), and a host of other prestigious institutions with Latin mottos do not require any knowledge of Latin for admission. Classics departments at universities are usually the smallest and least funded. Short of becoming a Latin teacher, and there are fewer of these jobs than any other position in schools or universities, there is not really anything you can do with Latin. So why bother with Latin? The language had its day, a very long one. Sed nihil ad infinitum vivit.

    Why Language Learning is Difficult

Studies show that in most languages, native-speakers tend to use less than 3,000 unique words on a daily basis. Then why is learning a seond language such an overwhelming task?
First, the written target language may use new characters if not an entirely new character set. Characters are put together to form new, unique and often unfamiliar sounds, even new pitches and inflections. For each word currently utilized in your native language, you must memorize the equivalent word in your target language.
Then you must learn rules for putting words together to form complete sentences of meaning, sentence structure. Then grammar with it's inherent rules and exceptions. Lastly, there's comprehension, listening and understanding at normal conversation speed.
It's no wonder so many people fail to learn a second language. Broken down to it's components, the challenge is overwhelming if not insurmountable. The Problem with False Claims
Many language websites, books, and software providers claim they can teach you to be fluent in a matter of days? Even offering

    PART I: PRINCIPLES
Necessity of incorporating Internet technology in teaching and learning today
    • Internet skills are important for employment, quality of life, etc.; our students need to master them no matter what their field or profession. Like reading, writing, or mathematics, Internet skills need to be applied across the curriculum. It is my contention that they are best learned through practice in many different areas, not taught in isolation.
Combination of technology with personal contact and support is optimal for pedagogy
    • For faculty: community is absolutely crucial for faculty seeking to successfully integrate technology into their teaching, including hands-on, discipline-specific teacher training; practical, project-based activities; just-in-time advice and help; long-term mentoring and support For students: Internet technology must be thoroughly integrated into the structure of the course (content, learning goals, assessment); the best assignments bring the fruits of Internet use into the classroom

Latin is the mother language for many modern European languages. Many words in English, Spanish, French, and other languages resemble Latin words and have the same or similar meanings. Latin was used in the records of most European countries and in the Roman Catholic records of the United States and Canada. Because Latin was used in so many countries, local usage varied. Certain terms were commonly used in some countries but not in others. In addition, the Latin used in British records has more abbreviations than the Latin used in European records.

Related Category: Language And Linguistics Latin language, member of the Italic subfamily of the Indo-European family of languages. Latin was first encountered in ancient times as the language of Latium, the region of central Italy in which Rome is located (see Italic languages ). Roman conquests later spread Latin throughout Italy and the vast Roman Empire. Numerous documents, such as Latin inscriptions and literary works, furnish much information about the language, as do the comments of ancient scholars and various related dialects and languages. After the ancient Romans began to develop a literature (in the 3d cent. B.C. ), a gap emerged between literary, or classical, Latin and Vulgar Latin, which was the popular (spoken) form of the language. This division had become considerable by the beginning of the Roman Empire. It is especially from Vulgar Latin, carried by the soldiers and colonists of Rome throughout the Roman Empire, that the modern Romance languages are descended.
