Subject Area: This topic may be covered in Spanish, English and even in History classes. Instructional Goal: The instructional goal for this lesson was to introduce the learner to Mexico's culture, people, language and celebration of traditions. Each student had to develop their own Cultural Report Slide Show. Submitted By Monica Enriquez, Spanish Teacher *student examples Rationale Supply List Learning Strategies Communicate Results ... Career Connections Rationale: To introduce Spanish I and II students to information about the Hispanic culture. Performance Objectives: Students will use technology to research and create Hispanic cultural reports on Hispanic countries and important Hispanic people. Instructional Strategies: Note from teacher: Students will be encouraged to do several activities on this topic. Below are ideas that I have used with my students and have been very fun and very successful. For the past three years that I have been teaching, I have assigned a Cultural Report to each of my students. My first level Spanish classes were assigned a country in which they had to research, type two pages, and present. The student's material including visual aides to their classmates. I video taped each of their presentations and once every one had completed their cultural reports, I allowed them to view their recorded presentations in class. They enjoyed watching themselves on television!

International Holidays: The Poinsettia and the use of Fans in Latin American Countries
Optional Activity:
*Christmas
*Winter Season Theme The poinsettia is a beautiful flowering shrub native of Mexico. The poinsettia is the most popular and best-selling potted plant in the U.S.A. The global popularity of the plant was actually spread by an American who introduced the plant to the U.S. and it is named after him: Joel Roberts Poinsett . December 12 is National Poinsettia Day , it marks the death of Mr. Poinsett and is meant to enjoy and share the beauty of the poinsettia. The activities below will explore the poinsettia, and center on how this plant is meaningful during Christmas celebrations in Mexico and other Latin American countries. The use of hand held fans is also deeply entrenched in Latin American tradition. The craft, a paper fan decorated with a poinsettia, will provide a vehicle to have children participate in this multicultural experience or revisit the traditions in their culture. The craft makes a nice holiday ornament/decoration or gift for friends, and family members.

Latin: The Mother Language of Music Teacher: J. Michael Rogers
Course: Chorus
NCSCS Goals and/or Objectives:
Goal 8: The learner will understand relationships between the other arts and content areas outside the arts.
Length of Implementation: Thirty Minutes
Integrated Academy Course: Latin
Essential Question:
Why was Latin used in the music of the early Christian church?
Lesson Plan:
Instruction:
The students will sing two compositions that incorporate Latin text from the sacred literature. The translation will be given and rules of basic pronunciation will be covered. The cooperation and participation of a Latin teacher would be helpful at this point. Discussion will be held concerning the origin of Latin language in the church music. A Compact Disc containing Latin text music will be played. Attention to cognates will be pointed out. Discussion will be entertained as to the reasons behind the Church’s decision to use Latin as the language of the Church.
Resources: Music utilizing Latin text will be needed. A Latin text would be very helpful. The Internet and Media Centers would help in finding appropriate material for translation. Activities: Have students attempt to translate text using any available cognates. Have the students take a brief Latin text and set it to a chant melody (melody with irregular rhythm and no harmony).
