Governor's Institute for World Language Educators Greetings from Dr. DeLeo After reviewing grant applications, the Pennsylvania Department of Education awarded the contract to host the Governor’s Institute for World Languages to NEIU 19. The Curriculum and Instruction Department subcontracts with Marywood University to provide the housing, meals, and classrooms for the Institute. The President of Marywood holds a reception to welcome the presenters, administrators, and participants. The gathering is a good opportunity for colleagues to meet and share classroom and travel experiences. The Institute features small classes such as technology, art and music integration, immersion activities, and a fieldtrip to New York City. With respect to classes, the days are devoted to standards and their implication for teaching. A second day explores teaching reading in a second language. National and international leaders in research, teaching, and policy and publication gave the classes. These leaders were June Phillips, Frank Medley, Susan Bacon, Richard Korb, and Elizabeth Bernhardt. A third day is devoted to a festival of practices given by respected teachers from Pennsylvania school districts and members of the NEIU Curriculum and Instruction Department. Each table in Marywood's dining hall displays a flag from another country in which the group's target language is spoken. Participants gather together to speak in the target language with colleagues and presenters during meals. Their enthusiasm has been so great that they have even brought their instruments and folk songs in their target language. Each language takes its turn at singing for the group. After dinner there are immersion activities led by members of the World Language Institute Steering Committee.
