back to December 2004 frontpage Playing Games in Beginning Latin : PANCIERA (con't.) Despite my best attempts to vary my presentation of the grammar, the exercises for homework, and the activities in class, Latin was going over like a lead balloon. So in desperation I decided to develop a few games in an attempt to shake the students out of their lethargy. What follows is a report on some of the games I played last fall or am in the process of developing, as well as some observations about the pedagogical value of including games in introductory Latin.
I must admit that, trained on the straight ahead, no-nonsense approach of Wheelock, I was leery of using valuable class time on something that sounded so frivolous. But recently I read the following passage by Quintilian about the importance of play and games in education:
There is undoubtedly much we as classicists can learn from modern educational theorists and cognitive psychologists about the value of using games in our teaching, but it is gratifying when one of our own is so sensible and ahead of his time. Quintilian confirms my own observations that games help to relax students, improve their mood and alertness, and are especially effective at creating an active learning environment.

How Can I Help My Child in French Immersion? How can I help my child
in French Immersion?
You have already made important decisions about your child’s Education. You have enrolled them in a French Program and you sincerely want them to get the most out of this excellent educational opportunity.
French is a relatively easy second language for English speakers to learn because of the close historical relationship between the two languages. Their alphabets and sentence structures are very similar. In addition, many English words come from French or from Latin, a common root of both languages. What began with a classroom of 30 students whose parents wanted their children to learn Canada’s other official language through he publicly funded school system is now a program of choice with over 300,000 students enrolled across Canada.
In 1977, a nationwide support group called Canadian Parents for French had formed and became a major catalyst in the spread of their new concept in second-language education. Today, parents continue to be the major driving force behind French immersion-enrolling their children, supporting their children and their school, helping with extracurricular activities, monitoring program quality and promoting the program with governments, school boards, other parents and the public. Most parents of Immersion children cannot help their children with French at home and our goal with the following information is to make the transition for you and your child as easy as possible. When we first enter our children in the Immersion program we all want what is best for our children and that they receive quality education in French and English.

Festival Rendezvous
by Celtic Fiddle
The Celtic Fiddle Festival is actually a trio of musicians, not a musical gathering. The misleading name arose from the group's origins, when three dazzling Celtic fiddlers joined forces for what was meant to be a one-time U.S. tour in 1992. Kevin Burke represents the Irish tradition, Johnny Cunningham the Scottish, and Christian LeMatre the Breton. Together they've made marvelous music for a number of years. Here are three masters combining to shine a light on the tunes themselves, and at the same time illustrate the similarities and connections among the parts of the Celtic dispersion. One player melds seamlessly into another, and the music speaks beautifully and eloquently throughout.
Ultimate Copland Album
Aaron Copland once confessed that his famous composition, "Appalachian Spring" - written for a Martha Graham ballet - really had very little to do with Appalachia or spring. Many critics contend it's his best work and arguably the best dance composition ever created by an American composer.

Program Overview Program Composition Spanish Instruction Facilities and Accommodations ... Program Prices Program Overview Over the past quarter century, Conversa has been dedicated to the teaching of Spanish as a second language. Our program's strengths and our country's character and charm have attracted people from all over the world. Sparked by the increasing number of high school students attending the program since 1990, we decided to design a new program dedicated to their specific interests and needs. Program Composition To Top The program combines our well-established Intensive Spanish Program with a number of social and cultural activities geared towards high school students' interests. These activities include lectures on career path development, the college experience, various fields of study and Costa Rican and Latin American culture. The program also includes a number of social activities, ranging from Latin dance lessons to pottery classes and cooking classes to community service. Spanish Instruction To Top Students are tested on day one to assess their current language level. Small homogenous groups are formed, maximum four students per group. Students are exposed to a new instructor for each week of the program. The instruction is entirely in Spanish, and each week, a specific grammatical sequence is presented. The instructors are skilled in blending conversation with grammar to meet the individual needs of the group members. A portion of each day is dedicated to the correction of written homework exercises, and about forty-five minutes to one hour of homework per day is required. Students are frequently moved from one group to another during the program to maintain smooth functioning and to maximize individual progress.
