Course Description
The course is designed to give the beginning student a comprehensive introduction to the grammar and vocabulary of the Latin Language. Latin is a language for which we have a continuous written record from the few stone inscriptions in Latin from the sixth century BC to those smatterings of Latin that are still being composed today. This course is geared towards teaching the student to read the style of Latin current among the most literate members of Roman society of the period of the beginning of the first century BC through the second century AD the Latin of such Roman authors as Cicero, Caesar, Catullus, Vergil, Horace, Quintilian, Juvenal and Apuleius, to name a few. At the same time, however, the course will provide a solid foundation for study of latinity of all periods and styles, including the Latin of late antiquity, and medieval, ecclesiastical and scientific Latin. The course is divided into two semesters. At the end of the first semester you will have gained a mastery of most of the Latin forms and will have learned enough of Latin syntax to begin to translate complex sentences. In addition you will be well on your way to the possession of a base Latin vocabulary for reading. At the end of the first semester we will translate some relatively easy passages of real Latin from both the Classical and Medieval periods. Should you choose to continue with your study of Latin, at the end of the second semester you will spend a number of weeks reading Latin texts of considerable difficulty and the highest quality. Concentrate on these worthy goals, but also enjoy the process of attaining them for the many challenges you will overcome along the way. A language itself, apart form its literature, is a fascinating thing to encounter.

Ecclesiastical Latin
Ecclesiastical Latin , sometimes called "Church Latin," is the Latin language as used in documents of the Roman Catholic Church and in the Latin liturgies of the Catholic Church. The dogmatic definitions of the first seven General Councils were given in Greek , and even in Rome Greek was at first the language of the liturgy and the language in which the first Popes wrote. Clearly, the Holy See is not obliged to have Latin as its official language and, in theory, could change its practice. However, this is unlikely to happen in the foreseeable future. As a language no longer in common use (a "dead" language, though some would dispute the exactness of this description), Latin has the advantage that the meaning of its words is no longer subject to change from century to century. This helps to ensure theological precision and to safeguard orthodoxy. Accordingly, Pope John Paul II reaffirmed the importance of Latin for the Church and in particular for those doing ecclesiastical studies.

Advanced Composition The Argument Culture Fall 2003 Updated November 24, 2003 Roxanne Mountford
Office: ML 426
roxanne@u.arizona.edu Course Description Required Materials Course Requirements Assignments ... Return to Homepage Course Description For many years, advanced composition has been a site where students engage in advanced study of rhetorical principles for writing and speaking (particularly drawn from classical rhetoric) and apply what they learn to the study of contemporary culture. In this class we will study our "argument culture" as it plays out in local and national politics. According to Deborah Tannen, the United States is stuck in "a pervasive warlike atmosphere" in which "public dialogue, and just about anything else we need to accomplish," is approached "as if it were a fight" ( The Argument Culture 1). At a moment when so many important issues are being debated at the national level, it is a good moment to become more aware of the quality of arguments others are making. You will learn how to analyze arguments using principles of classical and contemporary rhetoric and will practice both oral and written persuasion. In the process, you will also refine your writing for logic and style. My goal as an instructor is to empower you to listen to political arguments with critical insight and to participate effectively in national life. Your final grade will be based on two major research projects with both oral and written components, several short writing assignments, and group participation. I will provide an environment in which you and your classmates will feel challenged to think but safe to learn. It will be your job to participate in discussions with good will and basic respect for others' views, work hard, stay motivated, and speak up when anything we do seems unclear to you.

Mary Harrington has taught Latin for over fifteen years at various levels, from Middle School aged homeschoolers to community college classes. A mother of eleven, she homeschooled her last four children, including in-depth study in Latin. The two boys were accepted at the Naval Academy, having scored 1400 on their SATs. Doug is now studying to become a forensic chemist for the CIA or FBI; David is in flight school in Texas. The oldest daughter recently graduated from college majoring in astrophysics. Mary firmly believes their grounding in Latin greatly contributed to their high test scores. The youngest daughter has her AA degree majoring in music, graduating with Honors. She is married and they are expecting their first baby soon. Mary taught for a while at a large Christian high school, and now she tutors online and continues working on their book, and really, really enjoys her grown children and grandchildren.
