Latin American Studies. ERIC Digest No. 19.
Gallup polls indicate that Latin AmericaMexico, Central America, South America, and the independent countries of the Caribbeanis a region about which United States citizens are poorly informed (Glab 1981). Yet for practical reasons of politics and economics, as well as cultural and historical reasons, United States citizens should be well informed about Latin America. This Digest considers the present status of Latin American studies in elementary and secondary schools. It discusses the need and rationale for Latin American studies, effective teaching techniques, and resources to supplement textbooks which treat Latin America inadequately. THE PRESENT STATE OF TEACHING ABOUT LATIN AMERICA Social studies textbooks and media often present an incomplete or biased portrait of the countries comprising Latin America. Newspapers and television news programs tend to focus on such spectacular events as earthquakes, terrorism, coups, and American foreign policy related to the region. "It is rare to find stories on the arts, humanities, or culture of Latin America" (Glab 1981). The same is true of textbook representation. A recent survey of ten high school texts revealed that "with the exception of one textbook, little recognition was given to cultural characteristics" (Fleming 1982). Latin American history was presented primarily in the context of United States foreign policy. The point of view of Latin American countries was rarely considered. Textbooks often created or reinforced negative stereotypes of Latin America and its citizens.

What factors determine city location, growth, and development? How does place influence the spread of disease? These questions form the basis of inquiry for geographers, teachers, and students. In exploring such questions, this video workshop for seventh- through twelfth-grade teachers provides a strong foundation in geography content and inquiry teaching skills, as outlined in the National Geography Standards. The video programs combine case studies that profile locations around the globe, engaging classroom segments, and commentary from geography and pedagogy experts. Activities and discussion questions from the accompanying print guide and Web site supplement the programs, providing for a richer understanding of geography education.

Regional Workshops: CLASP cosponsored a workshop for thirty upper Midwest faculty on "Interdisciplinary Teaching of Latin American Studies," led by Donna Guy (Department of History, University of Arizona), at Ripon College, Ripon, Wisconsin. The workshop was featured at the October 26-28 annual conference of the North Central Council of Latin Americanists (NCCLA).

Recently the Outreach Office organized a meeting of high school teachers representing four school districts in the Triangle area with Alexander Taylor, founder and editor of the Curbstone Press, to discuss the role of the press in education. This discussion engendered plans to form a consortium to raise monies from local schools and businesses to bring one Latin American fiction writer per year. The writer will give lectures, readings, workshops, etc. in the schools and local community.

Report of the Steering Committee
The CLASP Steering Committee met at the LASA convention in Washington, D. C., to formulate a plan of action to enable the organization to support a range of Latin American Studies programs. For the foreseeable future, we will focus our energy and resources in three primary areas: outreach, consulting services, and communication.
Outreach
The CLASP Committee on Outreach will continue to sponsor the Americas Children's Book Award and to organize a workshop for teachers at each LASA congress. New initiatives include sponsorship and financial support for Latin American Studies program-related sessions at the annual meetings of the regional Latin American Studies organizations. We begin this fall at the meeting of the North Central Council on Latin American Studies at Ripon College on October 26-28, when Donna Guy, a member of the CLASP Steering Committee and professor of history at Arizona State, will conduct a workshop on Developing and Teaching Interdisciplinary courses in Latin American History . CLASP will also provide up to four $500 matching grants per year to member Latin American Studies programs wishing to offer an in-service institute for K-12 or post- secondary teachers. Each year, CLASP will also provide up to ten grants of $100 to enable a Latin America-related speaker invited to a member's campus to speak to a community group or conduct an in-service teachers' workshop. Details on how to apply for both of these grants will be mailed with the January 1996 dues mailing.
