"Thank you so much to the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies for making our trip to the Galapagos possible! Every aspiring evolutionary biologist reads about the islands and how Darwin was inspired by what he saw there. To be able to go to the islands ourselves, to see what Darwin saw, gave a new inspiration to this new generation of biologists." Jennifer Imamura '07
Featured Course - Education, Poverty, and Inequality in Latin America
Professor Fernando Reimers is the instructor for a featured course in Latin American Studies. Dating back to the intellectual exchanges between Horace Mann and Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, to the study of education in Mexico by John Dewey, and to the leadership of Dewey's former students in educational development in that country, education leaders throughout the Americas have found comparative analysis a source of ideas to define what it means to teach well and for what purpose. The intensification of demographic flows and exchanges made possible by new telecommunication technologies and a global economy have enhanced the need for deep understanding and systematic comparison of the practice of teaching, of the ways to support the academic engagement and success of marginalized students, and of the results of policies designed to improve education in the Americas. Visit the course web site for more information.

Along the 1500 miles of the island- dotted Caribbean, the diversity among the popular festivals almost surpasses comprehension, but three basic types have been isolated for this exhibition at the Saint Louis Art Museum. The Hosay festival is even today basically East Indian Islamic in nature, while the Carnival recognizes European masquerading as an influence. The Jonkonnu festival of Jamaica has two types, both of which draw upon European masking traditions.
