Latin American TELESUR TV channel goes on air
BUENOS AIRES, July 25 (RIA Novosti, Igor Nikolayev) - The Latin American TELESUR news TV channel started broadcasting Sunday as a "counterweight" to CNN and BBC. "The launch of the channel is tremendously important to the integration of countries in Latin America and the Caribbean," Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez announced at the official opening ceremony in Caracas. The president said the channel was politically independent and determined its own information policy. Venezuelan Communications and Information Minister Andres Izarra said that in contrast with the existing global and neo-liberal information monopoly, TELESUR provides an opportunity to prevent the destruction of Latin American culture and civilization. Izarra said the Latin American TV channel would eliminate the 50-year-old monopoly of the United States on the propaganda of colonialism and imperialist culture.

There has been much optimism in this region in regards to the potential of new economies. The announcement made by Microsoft at the beginning of 2001 that the Xbox would be manufactured in Mexico was perhaps one of the most important indicators that in the following years the US game industry would try to create an alternative pole of development away from the Far East The "return of Captain America" (Price 2001), a phrase analysts coined to describe the reemergence of the US in the global video games market Maquilas (Stoddard 1987) and is seen as part of a strategy to improve market competitiveness. If they did, however, their assessment would surely draw a blank among the readers of U.S. newspapers or viewers of its television. For the vast majority of them, the conference was the equivalent of the proverbial tree toppling unheard and unseen in some vast, unobserved forest.
El Salvador's Minister of Defence Otto Romero listens to speeches of leaders attending the Defense Ministerial of the Americas in Quito November 17, 2004. U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who has urged Latin American states to do more to fight terrorism, on Wednesday raised the touchy issue of using the military to combat terrorism and organized crime. While the major media were filled with speculation about Rumsfeld's future in President George W Bush's second term, his contribution to the meeting was entirely ignored by the electronic media and major newspapers with just a handful of exceptions.

AlterNet Friday 13 May 2005 To balance the anti-Chavez local press and pro-American CNN, Venezuela is launching a South American Al Jazeera. With journalistic heavyweights and an non-corporate vibe, the channel arrives on the scene as a number of Latin American nations are leaning politically left. Move over Al Jazeera, Telesur is here. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, tireless polemist and Bush nemesis, has a new pet project: a continent-wide television network slated for broadcast throughout South America in the coming weeks. Telesur, or "Television of the South," aims to be a competitor of CNN, Univison and other global giants seen by southern neighbors as minions of American hegemony. Described by its new director, Aram Aharonian, as South America's "first counter-hegemonic media project," Telesur reportedly has 20 employees but hopes to work its way up to at least 60. The Chavez government has coughed up $2.5 million for the project thus far and is permitting Telesur to operate as an affiliate of Venezuelan state television. Telesur is painted in populist hues, befitting a World Social Forum keynoter. A kind of Al Jazeera of the South, the commercial-free, state-funded channel will beam news, documentaries and other programming with a uniquely Latin flavor. The network will be boosted by the presence of journalistic heavyweights among them, Jorge Enrique Botero, a well-known television producer known for his coverage of FARC rebels.
