Family and institutions are the main settings for violence against children and adolescents
BUENOS AIRES, 1 June 2005 – The family and State institutions are the main settings where Latin American children and adolescents experience violence. This was one of the main findings from the Latin America Consultation on violence against children that ended today in Buenos Aires after three days of meetings, with the participation of more than 250 experts from the Latin American region. “Democratic consolidation in Latin America will only be possible when children are educated in respect, freedom and non-violence, protected against any violation of their rights,” said Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, the Independent Expert in charge of the Study on Violence against Children. “According to the last days’ findings, values promoted by the family and institutions are often authoritarian values that use violence as their main tool,” he added. Violence at home arises in private settings where certain traditional sexist and authoritarian practices prevail. Violence in the family affects mainly girls, especially in the form of sexual abuse. According to Nils Kastberg, Regional Director of UNICEF Americas and Caribbean Regional Office, “the silence and the unacceptable tolerance that surrounds abuse in family settings contribute to the current state of widespread impunity. We need a social movement from all Latin Americans, women and men, to break this silence now.” Most of the abuses against children take place behind closed doors by trusted adults: parents, family members and friends. Children often suffer alone, afraid of speaking out or being punished.

The Connection The Connection Dick Gordon: Don Terry, your expertise in Latin America. I saw a number that said it was close to 40 billion dollars going just from the United States to Latin American countries. Is that pretty close to how you understand it? Dick Gordon: Don, let me stop you there, I want to bring : Yes, um, I work for ACCION International : I would say that the first thing we found is that people, their main goal after five years in the U.S. is still to go back. And, they want to pursue and build a house back home or help their families be less dependent on them so that they can try to go back. But the other thing that we have to realize is that immigrants are doing jobs that nobody else is doing in the U.S. People are cleaning bathrooms in Congressional offices. And these are immigrants. And this is not a draining of money. I think people also try to get their families here in the U.S., build a home, settle down. These are people that, the same as everybody else, are just trying to get their families and a better future for them. Return to main Recent Coverage page Home Contact Info Website Feedback ... They say that it was created to both compete with foreign media conglomerates and offer a side of the news that is uniquely Latino. Independent, they say, from any voice but that of the people. The truth, however, is far from their propaganda platforms. Telesur is being funded by the leftist governments in Uruguay Argentina , and Cuba , with Venezuela alone controlling 51% of the company.
