and the Caribbean
By Annabel Boissonnade-Fotheringham, for the Chronicle

In June 2003, during the follow-up meeting to the 2001 UN Special Session on HIV/AIDS, the General Assembly called for immediate action from countries in the region and the international community to curb the crisis. Although the highest rate of HIV transmission occurs in sub-Saharan Africa, the Latin America and the Caribbean region has become a source of major concern because of its own almost unnoticed but fast-growing HIV-infected population. The United Nations and other leaders in health and development expressed deep concern about the "relentless growth" of HIV/AIDS in the region. Media coverage of dramatic figures of HIV-infection in Africa has overshadowed the growing AIDS crisis in other continents. Executive Director Peter Piot of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) warned in 2000 that "the recognition that Latin America is facing a growing AIDS crisis is just not there, except in the case of Brazil". His statement did not raise enough alarm bells to stir serious prevention programmes into action. If, according to Mr. Piot, "the response (was) absolutely insufficient" three years ago, figures in July 2003 show that Latin America's status has not improved; in fact, it has worsened.

Latin American Studies. ERIC Digest No. 19.
Gallup polls indicate that Latin AmericaMexico, Central America, South America, and the independent countries of the Caribbeanis a region about which United States citizens are poorly informed (Glab 1981). Yet for practical reasons of politics and economics, as well as cultural and historical reasons, United States citizens should be well informed about Latin America. This Digest considers the present status of Latin American studies in elementary and secondary schools. It discusses the need and rationale for Latin American studies, effective teaching techniques, and resources to supplement textbooks which treat Latin America inadequately. THE PRESENT STATE OF TEACHING ABOUT LATIN AMERICA Social studies textbooks and media often present an incomplete or biased portrait of the countries comprising Latin America. Newspapers and television news programs tend to focus on such spectacular events as earthquakes, terrorism, coups, and American foreign policy related to the region. "It is rare to find stories on the arts, humanities, or culture of Latin America" (Glab 1981). The same is true of textbook representation. A recent survey of ten high school texts revealed that "with the exception of one textbook, little recognition was given to cultural characteristics" (Fleming 1982). Latin American history was presented primarily in the context of United States foreign policy. The point of view of Latin American countries was rarely considered. Textbooks often created or reinforced negative stereotypes of Latin America and its citizens.

Community Health Profile - Latin Americans
Download pdf version - latin_am.pdf This profile provides an overview of some of the cultural and health issues of concern to Latin American migrants who live in Queensland, Australia. This description may not apply to all Latin Americans as individual experiences may vary. The profile can, however, be used as a pointer to some of the issues that may concern your client. In Queensland, the major Latin American community groups are from El Salvador (2300), Chile (1200) and Argentina (750) with smaller groups from Uruguay (400), Colombia (380), Peru (330), and other areas. Although these countries have distinct histories, they mostly share similar cultures and customs, as a result of a mix of populations descended from Spaniards, Amerindians and Africans.
      Migration
There are three broad categories of migrants from Latin America. One group migrated to Australia under a recruitment policy in the 1970s, which offered assisted passages. Groups came from Argentina, Chile, Peru, Uraguay, Colombia and Ecuador to escape difficult economic and political climates. Many had middle class backgrounds and relatively high levels of education. Some had capital to set up business.

The film begins. A dizzying sound of drumbeats invades the movie theatre. Pulsating bodies take the screen. Dozens, hundreds of people, mostly blacks and *mestizos*, are dancing. Everything is movement and ecstasy. All of a sudden, gunshots ring out. A man lies on the ground a lifeless body. Surrounding him, the deafening music and the rhythm continue. The beat is frenzied. The camera travels from face to face in the crowd, until it stops at a young black woman. The frame freezes on her trance-lit face.' (xiii) 'they are in dialogue with a film past that was our own, with the roots of Latin American cinema. They are as harsh and essential in their form and content as the films made by generations of the 1960s and 1970s. They are also different, since they portray another political and social moment.'
