They are a means of increasing communication and interaction among persons of similar interests within the framework of the larger organization. They help to broaden involvement in LASA, and to make the Association more participatory and responsive to constituencies. For 2005 there are 29 Sections. LASA members may join as many Sections as they choose. The only requirements are that their LASA membership be current and that they pay the additional fee for Section membership (currently $8). The following statements reflecting the mission and activities of each Section are provided by the Section chairs. The name of the current chair, his/her email address and office telephone number are also provided. Please feel free to contact that individual directly if you have specific questions related to a Section and to contact the LASA Secretariat if you wish to join a particular Section.

This LASA Section focuses on comparative transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary studies involving Brazil and its relations with other regions of the Americas, including Spanish America, the Caribbean, and also areas of the United States where heavy populations of Brazilians and Hispanics have an impact on the local demography and culture. We believe that this Section will provide a space for bridging gaps in Latin American Studies.

This study examined the effects of age at immigration, education level, years of residence in the United States, socioeconomic status, and neighborhood composition on acculturation level for Latin American immigrants residing in the United States. Scales of cultural identification, enjoyment, language preference and cultural knowledge were used to measure acculturation level. Fifty adult Latino immigrants residing in the greater Washington, D.C. area recruited from various community settings to complete a series of questionnaires. The results indicated that length of stay in the United States, age at immigration, and socioeconomic status are strongly related to level of acculturation into both Hispanic and American culture. Participants who lived in predominantly Latino neighborhoods were more likely to be high on acculturation to American culture, a somewhat contradictory finding.

Introduction
Print Preview of Section Latin America , in the broadest sense, the entire western hemisphere south of the United States. In a more restricted sense Latin America comprises those countries of the Americas that developed from the colonies of Spain, Portugal, and France. Because these European powers used languages derived from Latin, the term Latin America was devised to designate the parts of the New World that they colonized. The areas that are now Belize and Guyana were colonized by the British, and the official language of those countries is English. Suriname was colonized by the Netherlands, and Dutch is the official language. These countries’ histories differ from those of others in the region and are generally treated differently by scholars.

Ultrabaroque plays on popular concepts of Baroque while acknowledging the pervasive influence of its origins in the spirit of the art and architecture of the colonial period. The prefixes ultra and post in the exhibition''s title suggest that the roots of Baroque in Latin American art are tangled, far reaching and, by no means, a single, logical system. Art in Latin America, as elsewhere, now stems from a multicultural and global perspective, where distinct cultural identities and specific national trends are not so easily taken for granted or even evident, says Jessica Bradley, curator of contemporary art at the AGO. This hybrid state of art crosses borders, questions the legitimacy of accepted categories and often defies expectations. The AGO seeks to connect the visitor with new communities and cultures. Each artist in Ultrabaroque: Aspects of Post-Latin American Art speaks in his or her own language, interpreting aspects of Latin American culture for an audience not yet familiar with its complex variety. The Contemporary Department at the AGO is planning rich educational programming around this exciting exhibition, including panel discussions with artists in the show, lectures, walking tours and a possible film series.

Examines anti-immigration activism in the U.S.A, focusing on the group founded by John Simcox and the Minutemen Project. 6,100 words ( approx. 24.4 pages ), 24 sources, MLA, Click here to show/hide Paper Summary
Abstract
From the Paper:

"Of course, this led to many more politicians having to add their comments on the issue. Most notably was Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. On April 21, 2005, she announced the introduction of legislation calling on Michael Chertoff, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, to appoint a Northern Border Coordinator. The Northern Border Coordinator would be responsible for devising and implementing measures to increase the security of the border between the United States and Canada and the ports of entry located along the border. This person would improve the coordination between the agencies responsible for that security and serve as the primary liaison with state and local governments and law enforcement agencies regarding security along the border between the U.S. and Canada (clinton.senate)." Term Paper #59876 Add to Cart (You can always remove it later) "George Washington Gomez"
This paper discusses the novel, "George Washington Gomez," by Americo Paredes, which strongly endorses the Mexican seditionist movement by depicting a protagonist whose life is ruined because he hates his own race and, thus, himself.

on Liberation Theology
by Ron Rhodes
Theological controversies are often confined to seminary classrooms or theological journals. But the controversy provoked by Latin American liberation theology has been public and it has been worldwide - involving the Vatican, orthodox and not-so-orthodox priests, lay people, sociologists, socialists, capitalists, economists, government leaders and their military, and much more. Liberation theology has certainly not been the passing fad some analysts thought it would be when it first emerged in the late 1960s.
Strictly speaking, liberation theology should be understood as a family of theologies - including the Latin American, Black, and feminist varieties. All three respond to some form of oppression: Latin American liberation theologians say their poverty-stricken people have been oppressed and exploited by rich, capitalist nations. Black liberation theologians argue that their people have suffered oppression at the hands of racist whites. Feminist liberation theologians lay heavy emphasis upon the status and liberation of women in a male-dominated society.
This article, the first of a three-part series on liberation theology, will focus on the Latin American variety - examining its historical roots, growth, doctrine, and present status in the world. Primary emphasis will be on how the movement has changed since its emergence in the late 1960s. In Parts Two and Three respectively, I will examine the Black and feminist varieties.
