Undergraduate Programs Program of Concentration in Latin American and Iberian Studies For more than fifty years Vanderbilt has shown a concern for and commitment to Latin American and Iberian Studies, becoming one of the first U.S. universities to establish a program of research and teaching in Latin American area studies. The Center draws upon renowned Vanderbilt faculty from the Departments of Anthropology, Economics, Art and Art History, History, Political Science, Sociology, and Spanish and Portuguese as well as faculty from our education, music, and medical schools. It fosters a lively research community on campus by sponsoring colloquia, conferences, films, and a speakers series that brings distinguished scholars, government and business leaders, and social activists to campus. Members of our faculty conduct research and publish on most countries in Latin America. For undergraduates, the Center offers a broad-based, interdisciplinary education through its major and minor programs in Latin American Studies. The program encourages students to study abroad in Latin American countries and Spain.

Latin American Studies The Latin American Studies Minor is an Area Studies program designed to foster an appreciation and knowledge of Latin America. With an area two-and-one-half times larger than the United States and a population nearly twice that of the United States, Latin America is a region of great significance. Its historical development has been influenced by indigenous cultures, European colonialism, and the tension between state sovereignty and foreign influence. While this development has produced the diverse cultures of Latin America, it also contributes to a shared identity. The Latin American Studies Minor promotes the study of Latin America as a significant world region of intrinsic interest - its cultures, history, literature, and politics. The program also offers students the opportunity to examine Latin America’s relationship with the United States. Latin America is one of the United States’ most vigorous export markets, and the expansion of regional trade agreements illustrates the increasing interconnectedness of the Americas. The Minor offers students the opportunity to study trade and other aspects of U.S.-Latin American relations such as economic aid, immigration, and the environment.
Program Objectives:
  • to generate student interest in Latin America.

Acknowledging the historical links and cultural affinities between Latin American and Iberian literatures, the series welcomes consideration of Spanish and Portuguese texts and topics, while also providing a space of convergence for scholars working in Romance studies, comparative literature, cultural studies, and literary theory. http://banyan.chatham.edu/pti/
The Pittsburgh Teachers Institute, Chatham College, Woodland Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15232 In December 1998, Carnegie Mellon University, Chatham College, and the Pittsburgh Public Schools received a grant from Yale University with which to establish the Pittsburgh Teachers Institute. That grant which was part of a larger grant that had been awarded to Yale by the DeWitt Wallace-Reader’s Digest Fund was matched locally by funds provided by the Buhl Foundation through The Frick Educational Fund, The Grable Foundation, The Heinz Endowments, and the Hillman Foundation. Funds to continue the project beyond the demonstration period have been provided by the Alcoa Foundation, The Maurice Falk Medical Fund, The Richard King Mellon Foundation, The Pittsburgh Foundation, and The Wean Foundation as well as by the School District with funds from its National Science Foundation and Department of Education Teaching American History grants.
Following the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute model, teachers suggest topics; the college and university professors lead the seminars for the teachers; and the teachers-the Institute Fellows-are treated as members of the college/university community. While participating in seminars, Fellows prepare curriculum units or other documents that draw on the content of the seminar and then use their units or other documents in teaching their classes during the following school year. To increase the impact of the seminars on the district, the teacher-developed units and other documents are available to other teachers on the institute’s website and in hard copy.
