The first Europeans to come to LaSalle County, Illinois, were the French. Arriving in the late 1600’s, the French called the region the Illinois Country, a title reflecting the influence of the dominant local Native people, the Illinois. Among these early arrivals were priests, soldiers, traders, explorers and carpenters, each group with a different goal-oriented duty to perform. The priest saw this new country as an untapped mission field, ripe with potential converts. Explorers saw it as a new empire to claim for the glory of the king. Traders saw riches to be made in the fur trade, and the soldier was the visible symbol of French imperial might.

technological advantage over an enemy who may outnumber his people. To the east and north the British, French, and Dutch traded with the native people; the revolutionary transition these European trade items made to the old way of life was immense. It was therefore in the best interests of the local Illinois to be on good terms with the French, who held the keys to the stores of progress.
    The Jesuits
In the late 1600’s, the Church of Rome was a powerful institution in France. Although French Protestants known as the Huguenots offered a religious alternative, France was essentially a one-religion country. Within the Roman Catholic Church itself there were competing societies. Some of these societies included the Recollects, the Sulpicians, and the most influential of all, the Jesuits.

    Explore an Explorer!
created by Jane Helmka Jeri Cay Phillips Since the beginning of time people have explored. Explorers wanted to know more about the land around them. Thousands of years ago, the Native Americans came from Asia across the land bridge to a new world. They spent centuries exploring this new land and building new civilizations and empires. In the late 1400s, Europeans "discovered" this "New World" by accident while they were trying to find a shorter route to the Indies. Thanks to those great explorers we have lots of information on maps today! There were many different explorers that came from many different lands. No one went exploring just to keep busy. There were many different reasons why those brave explorers took off into the unknown. You will get the chance to read about several explorers, then you will choose one that you are interested in learning more about. It will be your job to find out why your explorer set sail, where they went, and what they found along the way. You will be the expert for your explorer and how they affected the rest of the world.

    Exploring North America
: La Salle traveled from France to Quebec, New France (Canada), in late 1667. He was determined to find a water passage to the east through North America. Leaving Montreal in July, 1669, La Salle crossed Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, and other places which are not documented (he did not return to Montreal until late 1670, and may have traveled down the Ohio or Mississippi River). La Salle made many exploring trips during the years 1671 to 1673. La Salle returned to France in 1677, getting permission form the King to explore the area between Florida, Mexico and New France (Canada). He returned to Canada in 1678 with his friend, Henri de Tonty, and others. In Canada, they constructed a fort on the Niagara River (between Ontario and New York) and built a ship called the Griffon, which they used to explore the Great Lakes. They sailed on August 7, 1679, traveling across Lake Erie and Lake Huron. They traveled across land to Lake Michigan, which they paddled across in canoes. Returning, they discovered that the Griffon was lost, the fort at Niagara had burned down, and many men had deserted their posts, robbing supply stores.

    Major Accomplishment
He was the first European to sail down the Mississippi River from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico.
    Early Life
I’m Rene-Robert de La Salle, and I was born in Rouen, France. As a kid, I went to a school run by Jesuit priests. I studied to be a Jesuit, but I left religious training in the year 1665 in search of adventure.
In Search of the Northwest Passage
The following year, I sailed to Canada where France had colonized. I had claimed some land near Montreal and became a fur trader. I did much of my trading with the Indians, who told me about two great rivers—the Ohio and the Mississippi. The Indians said they thought the rivers flowed into the ocean. I thought that one or both of the rivers might flow into the Pacific Ocean. This would be the Northwest Passage that many explorers had searched for, but none had found. In 1667 I had sold my land and started on my journey to find the rivers. From 1669 to 1673, I searched for the rivers in North America, but I did not find them.
In Search of the Mississippi River
In 1674 I returned to France. King Louis IV gave me land that include Fort Fronenac, on the site of present day Kingston, Ontario. I created a trading post and then became one of the most powerful people in Canada.

    ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY
FEBRUARY 6: February 6, 1682: Today, Rene Robert Cavelier , Sieur de La Salle, and a force of 22 French and 31 Indians will reach the juncture of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. La Salle will then sail down the Mississippi to see if it empties into the Gulf of Mexico. The expedition will contact many Indian tribes along the way. Based on this expedition, La Salle will claim the Mississippi Valley, and Louisiana, for the French. La Salle will reach the Gulf of Mexico on April 9, 1682. February 6, 1973: Local authorities have failed to charge the white killer of a local Oglala Indian named Wesley Bad Heart Bull with murder. Angered by this lack of action, several militant Indians set fire to the chamber of commerce building, and the court house in custer, South Dakota.
    BACKGROUND: From http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ms/state/lasalle.html
La Salle's chief title to enduring fame lies in his famous journey of exploration to the mouth of the Mississippi River in 1682. He was born at Rouen, France, and educated at a Jesuit seminary. While still a young man, he went to Canada to seek his fortune, and was patronized by M. Talon, the Intendant. For his eminent services in the exploration of the Canadian lakes, he was rewarded with a patent of nobility by King Louis, on the occasion of a visit to France in 1675. In 1678 he was commissioned to undertake the exploration of the Mississippi and was issued the following patent: "Louis, by the Grace of God, King of France and Navarre: To Our Dear and Well Beloved Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, Greeting:
