History and Government
History: Laos was occupied during the fourth and fifth centuries AD by Chinese people from the north. It was subject to strong Indian influence from the eighth century onwards and adopted Buddhism. For 200 years from the early 11th century, Laos was part of the Khmer Angkor Empire. It was during this period that the Lao people, who originated in Thailand, invaded the area and displaced the previously dominant Chinese. However, there is some evidence that the Mongol empire had some influence over events in the region in the late 13th and early 14th centuries, probably in alliance with the Angkor kingdom. Following the collapse of the Khmer empire, the independent kingdom of Lan Xang, which dates back to 1349, was established as a single entity bounded by Siam (Thailand), China to the north, Vietnam and the Mekong river, occupying roughly the same territory as modern-day Laos. Populated by a mixture of ethnic Laos, Thais and various hill tribes, the Lan Xang empire lasted for three centuries while fighting off successive invasions from Vietnam, Siam (Thailand) and Burma. Internal power struggles in the 18th century were exploited by its neighbours, notably Siam which finally conquered Vientiane in 1779. The city was later destroyed by the Siamese and the remains of Lan Xang absorbed into Siam. The 19th century was a period of political turmoil in which rival powers with shifting alliances fought for control of the territory. The Siamese were the dominant power until the arrival of the French, who had already established a firm grip in neighbouring Vietnam, in the 1870s. Laos then became part of French Indo-China, which lasted until the 1950s, with the exception of a brief period of Japanese occupation during World War II.

Laos - History The country has long been occupied by migrating Thais (including Shans, Siamese and Lao) and slash-and-burn Hmong/Mien hill tribes. The first Lao principalities were consolidated in the 13th century following the invasion of south-west China by Kublai Khan's Mongol hordes. In the mid-14th century, a Khmer-sponsored warlord, Fa Ngum, combined a number of scattered principalities around Luang Prabang to form his own kingdom, Lan Xang ('a million elephants'). The kingdom initially prospered, but internal divisions and pressure from neighbours caused it to split in the 17th century into three warring kingdoms centred on Luang Prabang, Wieng Chan (Vientiane) and Champasak.
By the end of the 18th century, most of Laos came under Siamese (Thai) suzerainty, but the territory was also being pressured by Vietnam. Unable or unwilling to serve two masters, the country went to war with Siam in the 1820s. This disastrous ploy led to all three kingdoms falling under Thai control. By the late 19th century, France had established French Indochina in the Vietnamese provinces of Tonkin and Annam. The Thais eventually ceded all of Laos to the French, who were content to use the territory merely as a buffer between its colonial holdings and Siam.

Laos Lao By the 19th century, the Thais had established dominion over the land and Tiao Anuvong, Prince of Vientiane, led an ill-fated nationalist rebellion in 1827. In 1892, the French invaded and by 1893 had established a protectorate over Luang Praband, with the rest of the country becoming part of French Indochina. The US was strongly opposed and threatened to cut economic aid. This destabilized the Government, and in August the leaders of the Committee for the Defense of National Interests took over. A military offensive against the Pathet Lao drove Sufanuvong from the capital, forcing him into guerrilla action in the forests. In 1959, the army gained control, while the Pathet Lao controlled the strategic northern provinces and the central plain of Jars. General Fumi Nosavang, the former defense minister, and his troops seized Vientiane on December 13 1960, driving out Pathet Lao troops. A massive air raid left 1,500 dead and forced Vientiane to surrender. The Thai and US supported Revolutionary Anti-Communist Committee, headed by Fumi Nosavang and Prince Bun Um claimed legitimacy to govern. On December 20 1960, however, Princes Suvana Fuma and Sufanuvong declared their intention of forming a national unity government.

Early History
The original inhabitants of Laos were Austroasiatic peoples, who lived by hunting and gathering before the advent of agriculture. Skilled at river navigation using canoes, Laotian traders used routes through the mountains, especially rivers, from earliest times. The most important river route was the Mekong because its many tributaries allowed traders to penetrate deep into the hinterland, where they bought products such as cardamom, gum benzoin, sticklac, and many foods.
Power Centers in the Middle Mekong Valley
A number of princely fiefdoms based on wet rice cultivation and associated with the pottery and bronze culture of Ban Chiang developed in the middle Mekong Valley from the first century A.D. These fiefdoms exercised power over their neighbors, in circumstances of generally sparse populations, through expanding and contracting spheres of influence best described by the term mandala . Commerce, marriage contracts, and warfare served to expand a mandala Thus, a plurality of power centers occupied the middle Mekong Valley in early times. Sikhôttabong was a

Laos Table of Contents HISTORICAL RESEARCH SHOWS that the rudimentary structures of a multiethnic state existed before the founding of the Kingdom of Lan Xang in the thirteenth century. These prethirteenth-century structures consisted of small confederative communities in river valleys and among the mountain peoples, who found security away from the well-traveled rivers and overland tracks where the institutions and customs of the Laotian people were gradually forged in contact with other peoples of the region. During these centuries, the stirring of migrations as well as religious conflict and syncretism went on more or less continuously. Laos's shortlived vassalage to foreign empires such as the Cham, Khmer, and Sukhothai did nothing to discourage this process of cultural identification and, in fact, favored its shaping. In the thirteenth centuryan historically important watershed- -the rulers of Louangphrabang (Luang Prabang) constituted a large indigenous kingdom with a hierarchical administration. Even then, migratory and religious crosscurrents never really ceased. The durability of the kingdom itself is attested to by the fact that it lasted within its original borders for almost four centuries. Today, the Lao People's Democratic Republic (LPDR, or Laos) covers only a small portion of the territory of that former kingdom.

While you can meet citizen interested in sex accidentally, the chances of success are not particularly high if you are there only for a limited period of time (as I said: no prostitutes). On the other hand, they often are sexually attracted to foreign people. For young women, especially in the big cities, it is chic to have a Western boyfriend. So, there must be a trick to overcome the time-consuming "accidental", and to link more effectively the sexual interests of foreign visitors with those of locals. Try the Internet. Laos traces its first recorded history and its origins as a unified state to the emergence of the Kingdom of Lan Xang (literally, "million elephants") in 1353. Under the rule of King Fa Ngum, the wealthy and mighty kingdom covered much of what today is Thailand and Laos. His successors, especially King Setthathirat in the 16th century, helped establish Buddhism as the predominant religion of the country.
By the 17th century, the kingdom of Lan Xang entered a period of decline marked by dynastic struggle and conflicts with its neighbors. In the late 18th century, the Siamese (Thai) established hegemony over much of what is now Laos. The region was divided into principalities centered on Luang Prabang in the north, Vientiane in the center, and Champassak in the south. Following their colonization of Vietnam, the French supplanted the Siamese and began to integrate all of Laos into the French empire. The Franco-Siamese treaty of 1907 defined the present Lao boundary with Thailand.
During World War II, the Japanese occupied French Indochina, including Laos. King Sisavang Vong of Luang Prabang was induced to declare independence from France in 1945, just prior to Japan's surrender. During this period, nationalist sentiment grew. In September 1945, Vientiane and Champassak united with Luang Prabang to form an independent government under the Free Laos (Lao Issara) banner. The movement, however, was short-lived. By early 1946, French troops reoccupied the country and conferred limited autonomy on Laos following elections for a constituent assembly.

    Laos : History Brief
For centuries Laos has been a pawn in the strategic games between neighbouring states, and more recently, between world powers. Perhaps due to the Lao people's devout Buddhism and tolerance, nationalist aspirations were slow to develop and the shaping of Laos as a modern nation state did not begin until WW II and the Japanese occupation of French Indochina. Laos gained independence from France in 1949 and in the 1950s Laos became a stage in the global struggle between left and right wing ideologies, with the USA and opposing Communist countries funding sides in the contest for Laos's allegiance. After the Vietnam War, the Prathet Lao (PL) revolutionary movement set up the Lao People's Democratic Republic (LPDR) and remains in power today.

The Mekong River valley and the Korat Plateau, which encompass substantial parts of Laos, Cambodia and Thailand, were inhabited as long as 10.000 years ago. Although data on these prehistoric cultures is limited, evidence shows that production of bronze and glazed ceramics began here earlier than elsewhere in the world. Many ethnic groups in these areas, both indigenous and immigrant belong to the Austro-Thai linguistic family. In Laos, most of these subgroups are identified with the Thai-Kadai and Hmong-Mien (Miao-Yao) linguistic families. The Thai-Kadai, have historically comprised the most significant cultural Diaspora from Southern China and Eastern Tibet to South-East Asia.
