Geography Of Laos
Laos is the only nation in Southeast Asia without access to the sea. It is surrounded by Vietnam in the East and North, Thailand in the West and South, as well as by China and Burma in the North and Cambodia in the South. The Mekong River flows through Laos and forms much of its border with Thailand. This river is a main transportation artery. The terrain of Laos is mostly mountainous with some inland plains and plateaus. The region has thick forest cover and has abundant water from rivers, lakes and rains. The climate is tropical in nature with monsoon rains deluging the nation from May to October, followed by the dry and "cold" season from November through February and the hot dry season from March to the end of May. Vientiane, the capital, is situated on the banks of the Mekong River and is the business, political and cultural center of the country. Most of the country is rural with only a handful of provincial towns that can be classified as urban. Luang Prabang is the most important city after the capital and it has long been a religious center. Agriculture still provides about 80 percent of the total employment and much of the GNP; there is no significant industrial or manufacturing sector. The main crops are rice, corn, tobacco and coffee. In addition, Laos is still a major grower of opium poppies, and, along with Northern Thailand, Burma, and Yunnan province of China, forms the so-called "golden triangle" of opium production. While mineral resources such as tin and gypsum are present, these have not been heavily exploited. However, Laos does export hydroelectric power to neighboring Thailand.

    http://www.optiontours.com/laos_facts_climate.htm
LAOS TOURS GEOGRAPHY The People's Democratic Republic of Lao is located in Southeastern Asia. The mighty Mekong in the west and the Annamite Mountains in the east offer natural borders to Thailand and Vietnam respectively, while Laos also shares borders with China in the north, Myanmar in the northwest and Cambodia in the south. With over half of this landlocked country's 236,800sq. km densely forested, and 70% of it mountainous, it is hardly surprising that a profusion of rare flora and over 1,200 species of wildlife finds a home beneath its tropical canopy. The country's highest peak, at 2,820m, can be found in the mountainous ranges of northeastern Laos, in the province Xiang Khouang, However, nearly equally as impressive are the mountains at the southern end of the Annamite range which reach heights of 2,600m. The Khammouanne and Bolaven plateaus dominate the central region of the Annamites. Almost all of the rivers and streams in Laos eventually end up feeding into the Mekong through one of its 15 tributaries, making a total of 2,400km of waterways and feeding the Mekong with more than half of its overall water flow. Though averaging rainfalls of between 1360mm, in Luang Prabang, to 3700mm on the Boloven Plateau during the June to October monsoon season, Laos regularly suffers from water shortages in the low-lying Mekong Delta plains. This can adversely effect the rice crops that account for almost 80% of the country's agricultural land.

In the West the country borders on Thailand and Burma, in the North on China and Vietnam, in the East on Vietnam and in the South on Cambodia. Laos is the only Southeast Asian country without direct access to the sea . Most of the country is mountainous, and where there are no mountains one meets with highland plateaus. Laos' main artery is the Mekong , which for more than 1,800 kilometres - almost half of its entire length - passes through the country or forms the boundary between Laos and Thailand.
