Culture The basis of Laotian culture is religion and tradition. Art, literature, music, and drama draw mainly from these sources. Towns along the Mekong are exposed to Western culture through Thai mass media. Theravada Buddhism entered the country in the 14th century. This religion and Hinduism have been major influences on cultural and intellectual life in Laos. The story of the Buddha and Hindu myths are the subjects of the carvings and sculptures found in all religious places. In the south, Khmer influences on the peoples of Laos are strong; in the north, Myanmar and Thai influences are readily apparent. As elsewhere in Southeast Asia, religious symbols, stories, and themes have been modified and localized. The snake, for example, representations of which adorn religious and royal buildings, symbolizes the benevolent spirit of the water and the protector of the king. The Laotians have a variety of folk arts, including weaving, basketmaking, wood and ivory carving, and silverwork and goldwork. There are a number of Laotian musical instruments, of which the khen

Open Site The Open Encyclopedia Project home submit content become an editor the entire directory only in Laos/Society_and_Culture Top Regional Asia Laos : Society and Culture Overview Laos' population was estimated at over 6 million in 2004, dispersed unevenly across the country. Most people live in valleys of the Mekong River and its tributaries. Vientiane prefecture, the capital and largest city, had about 633,000 residents in 2002. The country's population density was 25/sq. km.
About half the country's people are ethnic Lao, the principal lowland inhabitants as well as the politically and culturally dominant group. The Lao are descended from the Tai people who began migrating southward from China in the first millennium A.D. Mountain tribes of Miao-Yao, Austro-Asiatic, Tibeto-Burman Hmong, Yao, Akha, and Lahu and Tai ethno linguistic heritage are found in northern Laos. Collectively, they are known as Lao Sung or highland Lao. In the central and southern mountains, Mon-Khmer tribes, known as Lao Theung or midslope Lao, predominate. Some Vietnamese and Chinese minorities remain, particularly in the towns, but many left in two wavesafter independence in the late 1940s and again after 1975.
The predominant religion is Theravada Buddhism. Animism is common among the mountain tribes. Buddhism and spirit worship coexist easily. There also are small numbers of Christians and Muslims.

Laos needs more than symbols to cement its identity
By Tim Luard in Laos At the height of its powers in the 14th century, Laos was more than able to hold its own against neighbours like Siam, Burma, Cambodia and Vietnam. But internal divisions and the weakness that followed French colonisation left Laos vulnerable to the might of the various surrounding states that cut it off from the sea and continue to dominate it to this day. In many respects Laos is a client state of communist Vietnam's.
Competition between the two Big Brothers is hotting up
The two ruling parties have a common founder, Ho Chi Minh. Many of Laos' leaders were trained in Vietnam. And during its war against the US, North Vietnam's main supply line, the Ho Chi Minh Trail, ran almost entirely through communist-held Lao territory. Having brought the Lao revolutionaries to power, Hanoi has been protecting them ever since from insurgencies. Vietnamese troops have recently been in Xieng Khuang province in north-eastern Laos suppressing the latest rebellion by the once CIA-backed Hmong ethnic group.

Phia Sing was the Master of Ceremonies and Chef at the royal palace of Luang Prabang. He died in 1967. Phia Sing's notebooks containing these recipes were loaned to Alan Davidson, British ambassador in Vientiane in the early l970s, by the Crown Prince of Laos. Alan Davidson arranged for their translation and added much useful material explaining Lao foods and cookery. The text is ornamented by drawings, mainly by the Lao artist Soun Vannithone. e are 124 recipes. Some of them also figure in Fish and Fish Dishes of Laos , but their range encompasses every aspect of cooking, not merely the fishy bit.

Laos The Lao Front for National Construction directs the Lao Buddhist Fellowship Association. Since 1996, monks studying at the National Pedagology School were no longer required to study Marxism-Leninism as part of their curriculum, and the integration of Communist ideology in Buddhist instruction has waned greatly in recent years. Some temples have been permitted to receive support from Theravada Buddhist temples abroad, to expand the training of monks, and to focus more on traditional teachings. In addition, many monks traveled abroad, particularly to Thailand, for formal religious training. ... After 1975 the Government attempted to "reform" Buddhism and ceased to consider it the state religion, causing thousands of monks to flee abroad, where most still remain. However, the Government recognizes the popularity and cultural significance of Buddhist festivals, and many senior officials openly attend them. Buddhist clergy are featured prominently at important state and party functions. The Lao National Front directs the Lao Buddhist Fellowship Association, which adopted a new charter in April 1998. The Front continues to require monks to study Marxism-Leninism, to attend certain party meetings, and to combine with their teachings of Buddhism the party-state policies.
