Another excellent example of the richness of Lao culture is its folk music, whichis extremely popular with the people throughout the whole country.

Culture Laos Cuisine People of Laos Temple in Laos Laos Style ... Nature in Laos Culture Lao people boast a plethora of distinctive monuments and architectural styles. One of the most notable structures is That luang, the Great Sacred Stupa, in Vientiane. Its dome like Stupa and four-cornered superstructure is the model for similar monuments throughout Laos. Stupas serve to commemorate the life of the Buddha and many Stupas are said to house sacred relics (parts of Buddha's body). Generally, Hinayana Buddhists cremate the dead body then collected the bone and put in stupa which up in a round the temple.
Deferent styles of architecture are evident in the numerous Buddhist Wats. Three architecture styles can be distinguished, corresponding to the geographical location of the temples and monasteries. Wats built in Vientiane are large rectangular structures constructed of brick and coved with stucco and high-peaked roofs. In Luang Prabang the roofs sweep very low and, unlike in Vientiane, almost reach the ground. These two styles are different from the Wat Xieng Khouang where the temple roofs are not tiered.
Lao religious images and art are also distinctive and set Lao apart from its neighbors. The " Calling for Rain" posture of the Buddha images in Laos, for example, which depicts the Buddha standing with his hands held rigidly at his side, fingers pointing to the ground, cannot be found in other south East Asian Buddhist art traditions.

From Laos to Bangkok...starting culture shock in 3..2...1...now We finished up the end of our brief visit to Laos and made a beeline for Bangkok via an overnight bus. Leaving quiet Vientiene and waking up on Khao San Road is much like opening the door to your black and white farmhouse and finding Technicolor munchkins running around outside. We didn't properly appreciate how quiet and charming Luang Prabang was until we arrived in Vang Vieng in Laos. Coming from China, anytime we'd see more than three white faces together it seemed like a mad tourist rush and therefore LP seemed quite "touristy" to us. It would seem that you lose all perspective for these sorts of things when you start a trip in somewhere other than Thailand backpacker central. Our guidebooks described little Vang Vieng as being "backpacker friendly" and "a retreat from the road." Well, that's true I guess, but I think the Lao people were less tiring than hordes of dreadlocked, white guys in baggy pants drinking massive amounts of Beer Lao while watching the latest American flick, on a pirated VCD of course, at a backpacker restaurant. Vang Vieng consists of about four rough streets and alternates between identical guesthouses, travel agencies booking kayaking trips and restaurants that serve pizza and show movies all day long. Now, I can't say that we didn't enjoy this to an extent, but since we had already had a nice rest in Luang Prabang after China, we weren't too into the scene. Of course, we still indulged in a movie or two. It's about the only thing to do in town when its pouring rain and all outdoor activities are out of the question. We decided to only stay in Vang Vieng two nights before moving on to Vientiene, the capital of Laos.

      Bureaucratic Culture
The historical evolution of Laos created identifiable layers of bureaucratic behavior. Traditional royal customs and Buddhist practices set the foundation. Next, there was an overlay of French influence, the product of colonial rule from 1890 to 1954. During this period, several generations of Laotian bureaucrats were trained and often placed in subordinate rank to French-imported Vietnamese civil servants. The administration used French as the official language and followed French colonial administrative practices. From 1954 to 1975, there was an increase in United States influence, and the United States provided training and educational opportunities for future bureaucrats as well as employment in United States agencies. Because of its brevity, however, the United States impact was far less pervasive than the French. When the communists seized power in 1975, a new layer of bureaucratsstrongly influenced by North Vietnam and the Soviet Union and its allieswas added. Many of the French-trained and United States-influenced bureaucrats fled across the Mekong River. Of those who stayed, perhaps 10,000 to 15,000 were sent to seminar camps or reeducation centers (see
