Laos Country Information
Laos is a landlocked country bordered to the north by China, to the east by Vietnam, to the south by Cambodia and to the west by Thailand and Myanmar. Until 1988 tourists were not allowed access to Laos, but the country has recently opened up and it is perfectly feasible to travel all over the country, preferably with a recognised tour company. Following a considerable increase in tourist arrivals, the Government declared 1999 Visit Laos Year, and the number of tourists is expected to continue increasing over the next few years

Vth Season events will present Akha people through its history and its origins, its culture and its way of life, and finally its development and its deals. It will take the form of exhibitions and films projections. The Golden Triangle Peoples' Art and Handicraft was started in 1975, by an enthusiastic Akha woman, Deuleu Dzoebaw, and her friends to promote Akha culture. Mystical Laos landlocked - laos
... a closely guarded secret for nearly 20 years
l a o s - c u l t u r e
Laos - Culture From 1975 to 1990 Laos was effectively closed to the West. Despite the fact that it is now considered to be one of the poorest countries in the world, there is no evidence of starvation or begging. There is hardly any crime, people greet foreigners with unforced hospitality and have maintained a strong cultural identity despite the political upheavals. Festivals
The Lao word for festival is 'boun', which also means 'merit', and is an important part of life - the Lao will happily celebrate almost anything. There are four major national festivals throughout the year - the exact month varies according to the Buddhist calendar.
The Lao also celebrate Chinese New Year, Labour Day on May 1st , National Day on December 2nd and even Christmas.

47. Laos - Eating The Laotian Way
Brief description of the food culture, with recipe for Laap (Good Fortune), a beef dish.
http://cp.settlement.org/english/laos/eating.html
E ATING THE L AOTIAN W AY M ost Laotians eat rice three times a day. The most common type is "sticky rice," which can be rolled into a ball with the fingers and dipped into a sauce. Occasionally, people eat noodles rather than rice. Padek or fermented fish paste is an ingredient in many Laotian dishes. Hot chilis are also added to foods. The amount of chili used varies with the different Laotian ethnic groups. Other common seasonings are lime juice, lemon grass and coriander leaves. A typical Laotian meal consists of rice, fish, vegetables and hot peppers. The menu for festive occasions may also include eggs, poultry, beef or game. Vegetables include corn, cassava, white radish, sweet potatoes, and cucumbers. Papaya is the most popular fruit. Bananas, oranges, berries and groundnuts (peanuts) are also eaten frequently. A common Lao dish is called laap . It is a mixture of meat or fish and lime juice, garlic, rice, green onions, mint and chilis. Laotians also enjoy salads made with shredded green papaya, seasoned with padek and chilis.

  • Khen (34KB): The Khen is featured in Lao traditional orchestras, and used as a solo instrument. The khen can be difficult to master because the performer must produce a continuous melody by exhaling and inhaling without catching his or her breath. (847KB): This song is about a middle-aged man's torn fellings - he has his own family and has also fallen in love with a young woman. In the first lam, the man tells the girl that he will remain with his wife and their love cannot be. He wishes her happiness. In the second lam, the man persuades the girl to go with him,and endure a hard life together. Lam Saravane Pheng Sat Niao

The Laotian culture attributes its richness to Laotian art and sculpture, music and cuisine. Bronze is the most common metal for Laotians with gold and silver images all along. The smaller and minor images are usually made of precious metals while most of the bigger statues are in bronze. Theravada Buddhism being the dominant religion in Laos, many traditional images of Buddha in various stages of his life like his birth, enlightenment and death are prominent throughout Laos. The majority of these images are in bronze, which is called .samrit. in Laos. The huge bronze images prevalent in Laos include Phra Ong Teu, Vat Chantabouri and Vat Manoram. Laos.s ceramics were unexpectedly discovered in Vientiane area and excavated henceforth. Laos.s ceramics have clay and quartz mixed together which gives the things a light translucent green and brown glazed shade. Traditional Laotian culture is also influenced by Thai and Vietnamese cultures. Beautiful music floats through the Laotian instruments and produce exquisite tunes. Laotian music mainly includes a type of bamboo pipe called .Khaen.. Other instruments include flutes, fiddles and bells. In contrast to Thailand.s jazzy electrifying music called Mor Lam, Laotians manifest a slower, more serene and calm type of music called Khaplam Wai. In fact music plays an important role in the Laotian culture. Lao cuisine is not so much famous or exclusive in itself, so it rather uses the Vietnamese cuisine, which reigns more popularly in Laos.

The term Lao is most frequently used to refer to the dominant language and people of Laos. It is also a romanised form of the word Laos in the Lao language (ລາວ). It is sometimes used in English to refer to the country as well, but romanization standards hold that "Laos" is the preferred spelling. From the 14th to the 18th century, the country was called Lan Xang or Land of A Million Elephants

How to organize the ceremony.

The term "Watsa" means the rain or rainy season. the monks complete the practices of Buddha teachings during the period of three months in the rainy season without spending any nights in other places. On the 1st day of the dark moon of the eleventh month the closing ceremony for Buddhist Lent should be arranges. But, in practice, it is organized in the full moon of the fifteen in the eleventh month, one day before the due date. In the Buddha's teaching, the closing ceremony for Buddhist Lent was not decided, but Pavalana, prior notice ceremony was instead made after three months of Buddhist lent ended. So, in practice the monks made Pavalana on the evening of the full moon of the fifteen in the eleventh month. It is one day before the real closing date.
After the decision is made, the oldest monk sits on his knees, joins his hands and says Pavalana in front the others in Pali language : "To you all the monks, may I notice you in advance and do not in doubt that I made mistakes or sins caused by a breach of the rules of the monastic order (Patimakkha), please warn me, to change my bad behaviour for proper behaviour acting." Then all the monks have to say the same words until its completion. The monks who completed the Buddhist Lent, can gain Anisong 5, merit making.
