Since this is not usually acquired in undergraduate work, SAIS offers intensive and specialized language instruction. A student's background, area of study and career objectives determine the language to be studied. A student who wishes to begin a new foreign language should take intensive introductory work during the summer before entering SAIS. Many students find it necessary to enroll in intensive language programs during the first and second years. Students who plan to take Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, or Russian and who do not have a sound background in these languages should be prepared to take one summer of additional instruction at their own expense in order to reach the level necessary to pass the proficiency examination. Demonstrated proficiency in a modern foreign language widely used in international communication rather than essentially in one country is a requirement for the M.A. degree. Criteria include the ability to understand conversation, a command of the spoken language sufficient for the exchange of ideas in conversation with a native speaker, and the ability to read primary sources and other materials in the international relations field with accuracy and relative speed. Ph.D. candidates must acquire the ability to read primary sources or other materials in international relations in one or two foreign languages. Language proficiency examinations are given in September, December and May.

Constructed language
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
(Redirected from Constructed languages An artificial or constructed language (known colloquially as a conlang among aficionados ), is a language whose phonology grammar and vocabulary are specifically devised by an individual or small group, rather than having naturally evolved as part of a culture as with natural languages . Some are designed for use in human communication (usually to function as international auxiliary languages ), but others are created for use in fiction, linguistic experimentation, secrecy ( codes ), or for the experience of doing so ( artistic languages language games ). These languages are sometimes associated with constructed worlds The synonym planned language is sometimes used when referring to international auxiliary languages , and by those who may object to the more common term "artificial". Some speakers of Esperanto avoid the term "artificial language" because they deny that there is something "unnatural" in communicating in this language. However, outside the Esperanto community the term language planning refers to prescriptive measures taken regarding a natural language. In this regard, even "natural languages" may be submitted to a certain amount of artificiality, and in the case of

http://www.languages-media.com/files/main.htm
LANGUAGES AND THE MEDIA Digital technologies are changing the media landscape, improving the technical quality of media products and diversifying distribution. But what about the content? Are viewers getting what they want in the languages and form they want? Does it make marketing sense for broadcasters and license holders to provide multilingual versions? What about media products for the blind and hard-of-hearing? Is equal access to the media a right or simply sound marketing logic? If interactivity is more than just a buzzword, what role does language play in broadcasters' strategies? What are the new media trends and what part does language transfer play in them? Programme distributors have to be sensitive to consumers' wishes if they want to market their products successfully. For this reason, the 4th International Languages and the Media conference and exhibition has chosen Viewers, Languages and Marketing

This site presents the aims, history, and results of research by the Project for the Documentation of the Languages of Mesoamerica, internally known as the "Snake Jaguar Project". The pages that describe the aims and history of the Project, and instructions for access to and use of posted materials, are updated at moderately frequent intervals. The online databases and the NO FRAMES version that we are making available will be updated only at intervals of about a year or more. Papers by project members are posted irregularly.
This page was last revised on April 17, 2001.
Aims and history
In 1993 we began a project to document the lexicon, phonology, and morphosyntax of selected Mije-Sokean languages, which by 1995 was extended to all living Mije-Sokean languages. Besides the value of the work for its own sake, this documentation was undertaken in order to facilitate a reconstruction of the proto-Mije-Sokean protolanguage. This reconstruction, and the documentation of the individual Mije-Sokean languages, was to serve as a resource for revising and extending the decipherment of Epi-Olmec writing (Justeson and Kaufman 1993, 1996 [1994], 1997). In 1995 the Project began research on 5 [JCH, CHI, CHO, LCH, ZEN] of a projected 11 Sapotekan languages. These were to be documented, the ancestral proto-Sapotekan language was to be reconstructed, and the reconstruction, along with the documentation of the individual Sapotekan languages, was to help in the decipherment of Sapoteko hieroglyphic writing, which had been under way since 1992. In 1996 research on 4 more Sapotekan languages [ATE, ZAN, COA, YAI] was started. Work is not yet effectively under way on CUI and YTZ. There are arguably more than 11 Sapotekan languages; they fall into 6 branches: since we could not reasonably document them all, at least one language from each of the branches had to be documented, plus any additional languages that promised to be straightforwardly useful for reconstructing proto-Sapotekan, proto-Sapoteko, and proto-Chatino. This set of languages contained 11 members.

Weird Programming Languages
INTERCAL by Donald R. Woods and James M. Lyon
Created in 1972, the Mother of All (intentionally) Weird Programming Languages. A language designed to be as different as possible from all others. It is quite a success, except that it operates on binary numbers (fixed in TriINTERCAL) and it is one-dimensional. (Is that the same Don Woods who wrote Adventure?) Brian Raiter's INTERCAL Page ESR's INTERCAL Page alt.lang.intercal a newsgroup for the discussion of INTERCAL (or other weird languages, since they don't have their own newgroups) CLC-INTERCAL Object Oriented Quantum INTERCAL Threaded INTERCAL INTERCAL with multithreading.

Designed to be the smallest compiler ever. has eight very simple instructions. a nightmare to do math in. the only data structure is a big array with a pointer that points to one element. (Originally it was an array of longwords but now it's an array of bytes.) Said to be "the language that is as obscene as its name". (My Programs page has a featureful debugger for this language (for MS-DOS only) and a compiler (written in this language) and a program called BFINIT which I used to generate data initialization code for the compiler, among other things.
