Background information
On the initiative of Professor Stephen Wurm I was asked to compile the European section of the Unesco Red Book Report on Endangered Languages with a couple of weeks' notice in December, 1993. The full version of that preliminary report is now available. It is, however, easier to study it with the help of the indexes. Demographic data for Finno-Ugrian languages appear as a separate table Languages were originally divided into five categories; a sixth, potentially endangered languages, was added later:

ANNUAL REPORTS
INTRODUCTION
The Afroasiatic Index Project is a scholarly initiative that aims at creating an etymological database of Afroasiatic languages.
THE AFROASIATIC LANGUAGES
Afroasiatic languages are a group of related languages spoken by various communities from a large area in West African centered around Lake Chad ( Chadic ), all the way across North Africa ( Berber ) into Egypt ( Egyptian ), Ethiopia, and Somalia, and down the Great Rift Valley to the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro ( Cushitic / Omotic ). Crossing over into Western Asia ( Semitic ), they are also spoken in the Middle East through Palestine and Syria, down around the Arabian Peninsula into Yemen and Oman, and up into Iraq. This huge area encompasses and enormous variety of people who have shared over many thousands of years a common linguistic bond, the nature of which can be discovered only by careful investigation and comparison of the respective languages. It was to facilitate this process of bringing together as many Afroasiatic cognate sets, and as much pertinent literature, as possible that the Afroasiatic Index Project was conceived.

History and Discussion
of Native American Languages
At the time of first European contact, probably close to 1,000 American Indian languages were spoken in North, Central, and South America. Although the number of languages in daily use has steadily declined because of persecution and pressures on the Indians to adopt English, Spanish, and other originally European languages, well over 700 different American Indianor, as they are sometimes called, Amerindian or Native Americanlanguages are spoken today. In the United States many of the most famous linguists of the early 20th centuryamong them Franz BOAS, Leonard BLOOMFIELD, and Edward SAPIRtranscribed and analyzed North American Indian languages. Many descriptions of Indian languages are important in the literature of the linguistic school known as American structuralism. Today interest in Native American Indian languages is increasing, and Americanists, as those who study the languages are called, hold regular meetings to report on their findings. Current research on the native languages of the Americas is published in several periodicals, notably the International Journal of American Linguistics.

The ratings are based on the world-wide availability of skilled engineers, courses and third party vendors. The popular search engines Google, MSN, and Yahoo! are used to calculate the ratings. Observe that the TPC index is not about the best programming language or the language in which most lines of code have been written. The index can be used to check whether your programming skills are still up to date or to make a strategic decision about what programming language should be adopted when starting to build a new software system. It clearly affirms the place of languages education in the school curriculum and describes the purpose and nature of language learning.
The Statement and the Plan reflect an agreed commitment by all Ministers of Education to act together to provide quality languages education for all students to benefit not only the students but also the broader Australian community. The NSW Department of Education and Training is committed to support and promote the study of languages other than English including Australian Indigenous Languages and to build on the cultural and linguistic diversity of the state. In NSW, we recognise the cumulative nature of languages learning and the importance of whole school and community support for languages education.
