ahasdi01@pkrisc.cc.ukm.my Announcing An International Linguistic Conference 28-29 November 1997 Language in Borneo: Unities and Diversities Throughout Borneo (Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia), tens of languages and many variants are spoken. In the last decade efforts to describe and subgroup these languages have made considerable progress. Some of these research results have been published but many theories and discoveries have been set forth but not yet widely communicated. This conference intends to provide a forum for the presentation of the most recent research findings about languages, language classification and language use in Borneo. The theme was chosen to offer an opportunity for analyses about sub-grouping, areal features, dialect studies and descriptions, both structural and socio-linguistic. Moreover, a special session will be organized on Borneo's oral traditions so that culture, literature and linguistic specialists can join forces and share insights. This conference will be held at The National University of Malaysia (Bangi, Selangor) on 28-29 November 1997 in cooperation with the University's Institute of the Malay World and Civilisation, JAKO' (the Borneo-Kalimantan Language Network) and other bodies. Morgan Academy of Fine Arts, Galveston Independent School District in the Houston, Texas area, provides 90% of instruction in Spanish for a kindergarten, first, and second grade class. Children from two language groups, approximately an even number of native Spanish and English speakers, learn together and support each other's second language acquisition. Spanish literature and the Spanish version of Johns Hopkins University's "Success for All" reading program are used for instruction. Initial success in the program seems to come from dedicated teachers, students, parents, and administrators. Paper What makes it possible for children to achieve a smooth transition from speaking, writing, and reading in their mother tongue to the majority language of the country in which they live? The Houston/Galveston metropolitan area of Texas provides a fertile environment for the implementation of reading programs that provide just this type of transition. Many persons who emigrate from Spanish-speaking countries come to the Houston/Galveston area. This Spanish-speaking population is reflected in the large number of Hispanic students in the Houston/Galveston area.1 Oral proficiency and literacy in Spanish and English increases learning and career opportunities for all students, so it is especially important for children in this part of the country to have the opportunity to develop these skills in both languages. This can be accomplished through participation in a two way bilingual education program.

Where is Squeak Headed? There are two orthogonal forces at work in the Squeak team, with which we have been able to make two kinds of progress. These have most recently been articulated in Alan Kay's allusion to Arthur Koestler's metaphor of progress in two planes: the incremental improvement plane (which Alan calls the "pink" plane) and the paradigm shift (or "blue") plane. ("The Act of Creation", Arthur Koestler, 1964, Arkana Reissue Edition, Paperback, ISBN: 0140191917) The forces in the pink plane have to do with making an ever-better Smalltalk-80 system that can serve a wide spectrum of research and academic needs, while leveraging off the large body of ST-80 documentation, existing code archives, and synergy with high-performance industrial ST-80 systems. In this plane Squeak's high level of compatibility with the ST-80 language (and even with the MVC display architecture) is a plus, and the current forces of progress are aimed at a higher performance interpreter, with support for block closures, exception handling, as well as some answer to various needs for finalization. There is an active crew, led by Ian Piumarta, working on the first two items, and we are holding a couple of solutions to the latter issues in abeyance until the new interpreter is incorporated and running stably. The forces in the blue plane have to do with a completely different graphics model, evolution of the language model, and hopefully an even simpler yet more powerful language kernel. Each of these constitutes significant change, and is thus at odds with various entrenched interests. At the same time we feel that each offers significant benefits. A fair portion of the new graphics model, based on the Morphic interface to Self is already running and can be explored in the Play With Me windows of the release. While some parts of Morphic have not been honed to peak performance like other parts of the system, many are much simpler and yet more general. With the next release you will see presentation graphics support such as drop shadows and gradient fills, as well as desktop publishing capabilities including linked text frames, text flow inside and around arbitrary shapes, and letter kerning.
