Web Activities for any Language City Net Metro Link World News Tonight
City Net
Travel to your favorite countries and visit parks, monuments, universities, or just about anywhere else of interest. Do you enjoy Antarctica, the Caribbean, or the Middle East? It's all in one place called City Net. Are you planning a trip abroad for your students? You will find everything from pictures of your favorite monument to information in the target language on the natural resources and art in your preferred country. This can be done with any age and any language level as most of the countries offer information in both English and the target language. Description: Virutal Tourist is a great motivator. Upon linking, students can either select to view a listing of countries by clicking on the hypertext or type in the name of the place they would like to visit. Work your way through by selecting the country and city to which you would like to travel. Through these adventures your students are able to familiarize themselves with a variety of aspects of the countries chosen. Assign students to be travel agents and clients. They would put together a travel package that would suit the interests of their clients. In Geneva, Switzerland, for example, you can even get contact numbers for airlines and hotel information. Have students call or fax for information: there are local numbers for some of the airlines in your phone book.

Thematic, Communicative Language Teaching in the K-8 Classroom
Mari Haas, Teachers College, Columbia University
Foreign language instruction for children can be enriched when teachers use thematic units that focus on content-area information, engage students in activities in which they must think critically, and provide opportunities for students to use the target language in meaningful contexts and in new and complex ways. The national standards for foreign language teaching and learning support this approach to language instruction (National Standards in Foreign Language Education Project, 1996).
    Planning Thematic Units
Themes for curriculum units can be derived from many sources. Planning thematic units allows the teacher to incorporate a variety of language concepts into a topic area that is interesting and worthy of study and that gives students a reason to use the language. Teachers should choose themes that lend themselves to teaching language that will be useful for their students. Themes and lessons should integrate language, content, and culture into activities that allow students to practice the foreign language and that prepare them to use it in a variety of contexts. A focus on communication, including the interactions present in all uses of the language (for speaking, listening, reading, and writing) is essential. Students need to be able to interpret the language, express themselves in the language, and negotiate meaning in the language (Savignon, 1997).

Welcome!
The Institute for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies is at the forefront of Middle Eastern studies, teaching and research in Britain. The foundation of this is the University of Durham's long legacy of teaching of Arabic, Persian and Turkish language and literature, Islamic studies and social scientific studies of the region. We are the only Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)-recognised Middle East and Islamic studies department in the country, which means that we offer the highest level of research training and subject-specific supervision and teaching. We are a multidisciplinary department and our staff combine a wide range of skills and knowledge of the Arabic, Persian and Turkish languages and the economy, politics, history and culture of the Middle East region. We maintain links with many institutions both in the Middle East and worldwide and have a distinguished list of Honorary Fellows. Our multidisciplinary nature is reinforced by close collaboration with other departments in the University of Durham that have Middle Eastern expertise. On the website you will find information about the Institute, including undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, staff research and publications, as well as links to other major Middle Eastern resources.
