Faculty: Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Contact: http://www.arts.unsw.edu.au Campus: Kensington Campus Career: Undergraduate Typical Duration: 4 Years Typical UOC Per Session: Min UOC Per Session: Max UOC Per Session: Min UOC For Award: Award(s): Bachelor of International Studies in Languages (Major) Program Description The Languages program is designed for students wishing to prepare themselves for a professional career in the languages area, in Australia or overseas. It requires major sequences in two languages other than English, with the opportunity to acquire real fluency and competence through the overseas study period prescribed for the degree. Both within the language majors themselves, and in the electives to be chosen from courses in Asian Studies, European Studies, Globalisation and Linguistics, students will acquire a thorough understanding of the social and cultural contexts in which their chosen languages are used, and be ideally equipped to be articulate communicators and representatives for Australia overseas. Program Objectives and Learning Outcomes Australia's position in the world requires us to communicate in an informed manner with our neighbours and trading partners. We also have a rich heritage from the diverse cultures from which we have come, which continue to influence our experience of the world and represent a considerable resource in Australia's current efforts to "internationalise" its economic and cultural systems. Genuine proficiency in other languages not only greatly expands personal horizons, but also adds significantly to the choice of countries for overseas study and employment.

WHAT IS FLEX?
Most FLEX programs aim to give students a foundation for foreign language study; some programs introduce basic phrases in a number of languages in order to sharpen listening skills and familiarize students with the notion that thoughts can be expressed in another language. These programs often help students to decide which language to study in later grades. They may also serve to boost language enrollment in a school system. FLEX courses frequently offer cultural information that can help students develop an appreciation of other societies and customs. In some cases, the primary focus is on world cultures; these programs are usually incorporated into the social studies curriculum. Students should not expect to achieve fluency in a language at the end of a FLEX course. It is important that both students and parents are clear on this point. According to Lipton (1992), "FLEX is primarily a language/culture/motivational program."

For example, students matriculating in Summer 2005, Fall 2005, or Spring 2006 all fall under the 2005 catalog year and would follow the 2005-2006 Bulletin. Foreign Language skills are ensured by requiring that students complete either a third-semester college-level course in one foreign language or a second-semester-level course in each of two foreign languages. This requirement may also be fulfilled in high school by demonstrating a level of proficiency equivalent to passing the corresponding Regents foreign language exam with a score of 85 or higher. Normally this exam is taken after three years of high school language study. Exceptions:

Almost all universities and community colleges have ESL programs. In general, most private ESL schools are very flexible in terms of program requirements
http://www.studyincanada.com/english/geninfo/langs.asp
Language Schools
Canada has two official languages, meaning that international students can come to Canada to study either English as a Second Language (ESL) or French as a Second Language (FSL).
Many people choose to study ESL in Canada because of the many excellent ESL schools across the country and because of the neutral Canadian accent. Over the years, Canada has developed considerable expertise in the teaching of ESL because so many immigrants have required upgrading of their English skills. International students can study ESL for general, business or specific purposes. In addition, students can receive training in the teaching of ESL. Almost all universities and community colleges have ESL programs. In general, most private ESL schools are very flexible in terms of program requirements and intake dates.
Students enrolled in ESL or FSL programs for up to three months may study in Canada on a visitor's visa.
