on the University of Oregon campus. How can published foreign language research change your classroom? In my role as Editor of Foreign Language Annals, I have been asked a number of questions about the importance of research and the value of scholarly publication in general. These questions seem to reveal a lack of awareness on the part of many in our profession about the nature and role of research, especially the research that leads to publication in scholarly journals and books. Since I see this lack of awareness as a general trend, I would like to use this forum to answer some of the questions that I have been asked about research. While the major goal of K-12 education is to transmit knowledge, the major goal of most post-secondary institutions is to expand knowledge. In other words, university faculty members not only transmit knowledge by teaching, but they also engage in research to expand the knowledge base in their area of specialization. This research is then disseminated to other scholars in the same field through conference presentations, scholarly articles, books and other publications.

    Put Reading First
Helping Your Child Learn to Read
    A Parent Guide
    Preschool Through Grade 3
Success in school starts with reading.
When children become good readers in the early grades, they are more likely to become better learners throughout their school years and beyond. Learning to read is hard work for children. Fortunately, research is now available that suggests how to give each child a good start in reading. Becoming a reader involves the development of important skills, including learning to:
    • use language in conversation listen and respond to stories read aloud recognize and name the letters of the alphabet listen to the sounds of spoken language connect sounds to letters to figure out the "code" of reading read often so that recognizing words becomes easy and automatic learn and use new words understand what is read
Preschool and kindergarten teachers set the stage for your child to learn to read with some critical early skills. First, second, and third grade teachers then take up the task of building the skills that children will use every day for the rest of their lives. As a parent, you can help by understanding what teachers are teaching and by asking questions about your child's progress and the classroom reading program. You can also help your children become readers. Learning to read takes practice, more practice than children get during the school day. This brochure describes what a quality reading program should look like at school and how you can support that program through activities with your children.

Can Computers Teach Kids a Foreign Language?
    Cathy Miranker
Q: It seems like computer software can teach kids so many thingswhat about foreign languages? A: Computer software alone cannot teach your kids to speak a foreign language. Experts agree that it takes a real live teacher who's a native speaker to do that. But some computer programs can help when kids are getting started with a new language. The best CD-ROMs for language learners provide fun, inventive ways to practice, and exposure to the sights and sounds of new words, new people, and new places. Suggestions for buying foreign language CD-ROMs Little kids Kids 7-12 My favorite software for giving little kids exposure to a foreign-language via computer is the well-known series of interactive storybooks from Living Books. The following titles all feature Spanish: Arthur's Birthday Arthur's Teacher Trouble The Berenstain Bears Get in a Fight Harry and the Haunted House Just Grandma and Me Little Monster at School The Tortoise and the Hare , and Sheila Rae the Brave Just Grandma and Me is also translated into Japanese.

    City Net
Travel to your favorite countries and visit parks, monuments, universities, or just about anywhere else of interest. Do you enjoy Antarctica, the Caribbean, or the Middle East? It's all in one place called City Net. Are you planning a trip abroad for your students? You will find everything from pictures of your favorite monument to information in the target language on the natural resources and art in your preferred country. This can be done with any age and any language level as most of the countries offer information in both English and the target language. Description: Virutal Tourist is a great motivator. Upon linking, students can either select to view a listing of countries by clicking on the hypertext or type in the name of the place they would like to visit. Work your way through by selecting the country and city to which you would like to travel. Through these adventures your students are able to familiarize themselves with a variety of aspects of the countries chosen. Assign students to be travel agents and clients. They would put together a travel package that would suit the interests of their clients. In Geneva, Switzerland, for example, you can even get contact numbers for airlines and hotel information. Have students call or fax for information: there are local numbers for some of the airlines in your phone book.
