TEXT VERSION
Landslides
- Text adapted from USGS Hazards: Landslides page Landslides are termed the sleeper of all the geologic hazards. Though incited by snowmelt, rain, poor excavation, or earthquakes, they sometimes startle the unsuspecting homeowner with the ferocity of their rapid movement, or the slow stretching of the once peaceful terrain. Landslides constitute a major geologic hazard because they are widespread, occurring in all 50 States, and cause $1-2 billion in damages and more than 25 fatalities on average each year. Landslides pose serious threats to highways and structures that support fisheries, tourism, timber harvesting, mining, and energy production, as well as general transportation. Landslides commonly occur with other major natural disasters, such as earthquakes and floods. They exacerbate relief and reconstruction efforts, and expanded development and other land use has increased the incidence of landslide disasters.

Slope Stability Lab
The purpose of this exercise is to investigate both slope stability and landslides. You will create sand "mountains", measure slopes, and test the effects of water and rock layering on slope stability. Rocks are deposited on the Earth over millions of years. Sometimes they are deposited rather quickly and other times it may take millions of years. Landslides occur when a rock is not strong enough to resist the forces of gravity that pull it closer to the center of the Earth. Equipment Needed:
  • Sand (600 ml)
  • Gravel (200 ml)
  • 1-400 ml beaker
  • 1-100 ml graduated cylinder
  • 1-50 ml graduated cylinder
  • 1-pie plate (shallow, ~8 inch container) or plastic storage container
  • Newspaper
  • Paper towels
  • 1-compass
  • 1-ruler
I. Build a Dry-Sand Mountian. Hypothesis Testing:
When building a sand mountain, would you expect a difference in the slope of the mountain if the sand were piled up slowly or quickly? Why?
A. Create a dry-sand mountain by slowly pouring sand.
Procedure
  • Measure 400 ml of dry sand into a beaker.

Landslides History Facts and Figures Since 1842 there have been hundreds of known landslides in Australia. Between 1842 and 1997 at least 73 people died in 42 landslides and 15 people died in earthquakes in Australia. A further 49 people have been injured in landslides while 170 people have been injured in earthquakes. Between 1842 and 1997, more than 150 landslides have caused well over $200 million damage to buildings, roads, railways, pipelines and crops. A total of over 200 buildings are known to have sustained damage due to landslides.
Thredbo (1997) - An Australian Case Study At about 11:30pm on 30 July 1997, Australia's worst landslide occurred when a large section of steep mountainside below the Alpine Way road collapsed immediately above a section of the Thredbo Ski Village in the NSW Alps. About 1,000 tonnes of earth, rock and trees slipped rapidly down the steep slope, shearing the Carinya lodge off its foundations and slamming it into the Bimbadeen Lodge.

Disasters Landslides usually involve the movement of large amounts of either earth, rock, sand or mud or any combination of these. Landslides can be caused by earthquakes, volcanoes, soil saturation from rainfall or seepage or by human activity (eg. vegetation removal, construction on steep terrain). The rate of movement of a landslide can vary from exceptionally slow - centimetres per year, to a sudden and total collapse - such as an avalanche of perhaps millions of tonnes of debris. The distance travelled by landslide debris can also vary greatly, from a few centimetres in 'ground slumps', to many kilometres when large mud flows follow river valleys.
The Department of Emergency Services' purpose is to save lives, protect property and help preserve the natural environment through the delivery of emergency and disaster management services. Last updated 17 December . For information regarding this site, contact

MANILA, Philippines (CNN) Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will travel Monday to the southern Leyte province, hit hard over the weekend by deadly landslides caused by days of flooding, officials in Manila said. Defense Secretary Eduardo Ermita said the death toll had risen to 161 and 93 people remained missing and feared dead from the torrents of mud, rocks and dirt. Arroyo will travel to Leyte with U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Francis Ricciardone. The United States has offered military transport helicopters to assist rescue efforts. U.S. military C-130 cargo planes are on the way from Japan, officials said. Blocked roads, downed power and telephone lines have hindered rescue crews who have been battling rain and mud with shovels and bare hands in the search for survivors.

    INTRODUCTION
MAPS '82 DAMAGES SUGG. READING The U.S. Geological Survey produced special landslide hazard maps of the San Francisco Bay Area for the California State Office of Emergency Services (OES) and the National Weather Service (NWS) The USGS has experience with catastrophic events associated with the winter storms of 1982 and 1983. New USGS maps are geared to reduce the loss of life and property from storm-induced landslides and debris flows (a.k.a. mudslides). Landslide maps identify areas where the greatest threat to property exists from the movement of deep-seated landslides ( see computer simulation from 1996-97 for example ). The areas potentially subject to slope failure generally coincide with the location of previous landslides and specific geologic materials. Now, fly-by movies are available:
    • One fly-by depicts an animation of a slow-moving bedrock landslide, from a cross-sectional view. An instructional introduction is included in the animation.
    • The other two animations show, as red patches, areas of mapped landslides in the East Bay Hills and in Marin County. These areas are part of the 85,000 landslides that have occurred sometime in the past throughout the Bay region.
Debris flow/mudslide maps show areas where life-threatening debris flows would likely occur in the event of an intense winter rainstorm such as that of January, 1982 (
