Why Talk About Landslides?

Landslides are a serious geologic hazard common to almost every state in the United States. It is estimated that nationally they cause up to $2 billion in damages and from 25 to 50 deaths annually. Globally, landslides cause billions of dollars in damage and thousands of deaths and injuries each year. Individuals can take steps to reduce their personal risk. Know about the hazard potential where you live, take steps to reduce your risk, and practice preparedness plans.

68. NATURAL HAZARDS AND DISASTERS: LANDSLIDES IN CUBA
It seems reasonable to expect landslides to occur in the Baracos However, landslides are one of several geologic hazards considered in disaster planning
http://isis.uwimona.edu.jm/uds/Land_Cuba.html
NATURAL HAZARDS AND DISASTERS
LANDSLIDES IN CUBA
CUBA
Cuba is directly south of Florida and west of the island of Hispaniola. With and area of 114,524 square kilometers, Cuba is the largest of the islands in the Greater Antilles (Rand McNally, 1988). It consists of a main island about 1290 kilometers long and 70 to 200 kilometers wide with many smaller offshore islands. The climate of Cuba is tropical. Annual rainfall varies from less than 800 to over 2200 millimeters for different parts of the island. The tradewinds tend to bring precipitation to the eastern end of the island. However, the presence of various highlands causes rainshadows where conditions are much drier. November to April is the wet season. The hurricane tracks results in most hurricanes affecting the western end of the island (Academia de Ciencias de Cuba, 1970). Physiography and Geology of Cuba Landslides in Cuba Literature review found no specific references to landslide activity on Cuba even where discussions on geomorphology, geology, or soils were present (Furrazola-Burmudez et al, 1964, Academia de Ciencias de Cuba, 1970). It seems reasonable to expect landslides to occur in the Baracos Highlands, Sierra Maestra, and the Escambray Mountains in eastern and Central Cuba. These areas receive the higher rainfall during the year, host many steep slopes, and include bedrock with lithologic and stratigraphic conditions which appear to favor landslide development. Failures in colluvial material leading to debris flows and debris slides are expected when intense rainfall from hurricanes and major tropical depressions affect the Sierra Maestra, Baracos Highlands, and the Havana and Matanzas Highlands.

YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Flood Disasters (General) Philippines or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? MANILA, Philippines The United States has offered military transport helicopters to assist rescue efforts after landslides devastated parts of the central and southern Philippines. At least 89 people have been killed and 23 listed as injured, Gen. Melchor Rosales, executive director of the National Disaster Coordination Center, told CNN on Monday. But 125 people are still missing and feared dead from the torrents of mud, rocks and dirt, he added. Blocked roads, downed power and telephone lines have hindered rescue crews who have been battling rain and mud with shovels and bare hands in the search for survivors. The landslides were triggered by six days of pounding rains and winds in six provinces near the Pacific Ocean late Friday to early Saturday with the majority of the casualties and missing in the southern Leyte province. Mindanao island was also hit hard.

Parts of Wyoming have some of the highest landslide densities in the United States. Every year landslides occur in Wyoming, with some causing significant damage or disruption to daily activities These web pages have been generated for two reasons. The first of these is to increase awareness of landslides in Wyoming. The second is to provide citizens with a means to access current landslide data for the state. The landslides were mapped over a 15-year period by the Geologic Hazards Section of the Wyoming State Geological Survey. Over 850 7.5-minute quadrangles have been mapped for landslides. The Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) and the Water Resources Data System (WRDS) are in the process of generating coverages of them for Wyoming. What are volcano landslides?
Volcano landslides range in size from less than 1 km to more than 100 km , reached speeds of 50-80 m/s (180-288 km/hr), and surged up and over a 400 m tall ridge located about 5 km from the volcano!

How are volcano landslides generated?
Landslides are common on volcanoes because their massive cones (1) typically rise hundreds to thousands of meters above the surrounding terrain; and (2) are often weakened by the very process that created themthe rise and eruption of molten rock. Each time magma moves toward the surface, overlying rocks are shouldered aside as the molten rock makes room for itself, often creating internal shear zones or oversteepening one or more sides of the cone. Magma that remains within the cone releases volcanic gases that partially dissolve in groundwater, resulting in a hot acidic hydrothermal system that weakens rock by altering rock minerals to clay. Furthermore, the tremendous mass of thousands of layers lava and loose fragmented rock debris can lead to internal faults and fault zones that move frequently as the cone "settles" under the downward pull of gravity. These conditions permit a number of factors to trigger a landslide or to allow part of a volcano's cone to simply collapse under the influence of gravity:
